Job description

Your Opportunity:

The Health Care Aide (HCA) provides patient care services as an unregulated worker under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The HCA offers direct care to clients in their homes, both in the community and lodge settings. Responsibilities include providing personal care and assisting with activities of daily living as outlined in the care plan, such as personal hygiene, dressing, feeding, grooming, transferring, and mobilizing. The role also involves providing emotional support, respite care, and performing healthcare duties like dressing, medication assistance, catheter and ostomy care, and exercises for mobility and strength. Additionally, the HCA provides essential housekeeping services to support the client's activities of daily living.

Description:

As an HCA, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing personal assistance and support services to patients (clients, residents) requiring short-term or ongoing help, in accordance with care plans and policies. You will support activities such as hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety, assisting nurses with routine care, observing and reporting on patient wellbeing, and maintaining a safe environment in collaboration with health professionals.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active registration on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory, with proof of enrollment.
  • For nursing students: minimum 100 hours practicum, enrolled in 1st-year practical nursing or 2nd-year baccalaureate nursing/psychiatric nursing program, with proof of qualification.
  • Certification as a Health Care Aide through a Government of Alberta licensed post-secondary institution or deemed equivalent, assessed as competent by an Alberta regulated nurse, with BCLS-HCP certification within the last 12 months.
  • Effective communication skills in English, good time management, and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle, move, and lift up to 50 lbs or awkward equipment/individuals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with computers and programs such as ESP, Connect Care, and Microsoft Excel (minimum 1-year experience).
  • Medication Assistance Certificate or prior experience in medication assistance.
  • Recent healthcare experience working with older or chronically ill individuals in a community setting; home care experience preferred.
