Job summary

St Barbara Atlantic Operations, a subsidiary of St Barbara Limited, is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Trainer at the Touquoy mine site, about 1 hour northeast of Halifax. The role reports to the Health & Safety Superintendent and will ensure new employees, contractors, vendors, suppliers, and visitors receive the required safety induction.

Based at Touquoy, the trainer will support Emergency Response Team activities, maintain training records, and help foster a safety-first culture

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of Health and Safety experience.
  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • First Aid/CPR certification with potential to Advanced level.
  • Emergency Response training and/or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with mining operations or remote-site work is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver classroom and site-based safety training.
  • Maintain training records, certifications, assessments, matrices, and schedules.
  • Ensure training programs meet legislation, industry standards, and company requirements.
  • Identify training needs and recommend improvements to safety programs and practices.
  • Maintain compliance documentation, incident reports, and safety inspection records.
  • Coordinate Emergency Response Team recruitment, training, drills, and preparedness.
  • Maintain emergency response and medical equipment, inventories, and supplies.
  • Support inspections, investigations, hazard assessments, and corrective actions.
  • Analyze HSE performance trends and develop proactive training solutions.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, professional development, and a safety-first culture.

We seek an experienced professional to fill the role of Health & Safety Trainer.

This fixed term and full time position is based at the Touquoy mine site located approximately 1-hour northeast of Halifax, near Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia. The mine is permitted and restarting production in fall 2026.

Our Health & Safety Trainer will join a dedicated team. Reporting to the Health & Safety Superintendent, your role will ensure that all new employees, contractors, vendors, suppliers, and visitors receive the required and needed safety training upon their induction / orientation to the company. They will also support required training for the site Emergency Response Team (ERT).

The Opportunity:
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver classroom and site-based safety training.

Our successful candidate will demonstrate the following:
  • Must hold a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license (or recognized equivalent) with no restrictions or suspensions and have an insurable driving record.
  • Able to safely operate light duty truck on and off road.
  • 3 - 5 years relevant Health and Safety experience required.
  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or a related field), or an equivalent combination of extensive industry experience.
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR (at any level) with the ability to obtain Advanced level
  • Emergency Response training, certifications, and/or equivalent experience
  • Understanding/ exposure to various mining operations, process mill operations, variations of process and support equipment, &/or Exposure working in remote locations is highly desirable
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or other recognised health and safety designation is considered an asset
