The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the Town's safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Reporting to the Director of Community Safety, this position plans, implements and oversees the Town's safety programs.
2. Engage in developing policies, conduct safety training, perform inspections, and promote a safety culture for all employees.
3. Assess risk, provide coaching and training, and develop resources to prevent financial and operational losses and reduce workplace injuries and illnesses.
4. Assist in developing and implementing risk management strategies to prevent accidents and injuries.
5. Collaborate with the town’s leadership to address and rectify safety issues.
6. Interpret and apply evolving safety regulations to the workplace.
7. Oversee and manage the Town's safety program.
8. Ability to bring and maintain the Town’s safety program to compliance with Certificate of Recognition (COR).
9. Ensure the process is followed for any safety investigation.
10. Responsible for managing, updating and supporting the Town's activities related to Safe Work Practices, safety policies and procedures, and worksite hazard assessments.
11. Oversee the delivery of the Town's Health and Safety Manual.
12. Document and report on findings from investigations or inspections, recommending corrective actions where necessary.
13. Conduct internal audits and assist in external audits related to health and safety.
14. Update safety polices in regard to the Town's Health and Safety Manual.
15. Develop, implement, and maintain occupational health and safety programs in compliance with Alberta OHS legislation.
16. Regularly auditing risk assessments and hazard identification for municipal employee tasks, facilities, equipment, and job sites.
17. Coordinate with Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) and other agencies as required.
18. Assist in investigations, accidents, and near misses.
19. Participate in the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
20. Maintain training records to ensure employee certifications or competencies are current.
21. Serves as the primary liaison with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.
22. Conduct drills and simulations to test emergency procedures.
23. Develop and implement emergency response plans for Town facilities.
24. Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, safety training, and compliance activities.
25. Prepare regular reports on safety performance and compliance.
26. Manage the Town's SDS database.
27. Assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.

1. Must possess at least 3 years’ experience in the field of occupational health and safety.
2. Experience with Certificate of Recognition (COR) would be an asset.
3. Post-secondary diploma or certification in health and safety.
4. Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation applicable to municipal operations.
5. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
7. Proficiency in Microsoft programs and other computer-based programs.

The Town of Whitecourt offers a competitive compensation package to the successful applicant. The current salary range for this position is $86,673.95-$96,175.63. The successful applicant must pass a pre-employment physical and criminal record check.
