Health & Safety Assistant

As one of the largest, most progressive, urban districts in the province, Burnaby provides comprehensive educational programs and services to 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities. The Burnaby School District is seeking a Health & Safety Assistant for the Board Office. The Health & Safety Assistant provides information, assistance and support to district staff on a variety of health and safety matters and completes all health and safety administrative duties within the District.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains the incident database and maintains an action log of open incident investigation corrective items. Compiles and distributes Health & Safety monthly reports; distributes site-wide incident bulletins. Attends meetings as required, takes meeting minutes and distributes in a timely manner.
  • Ensures and supports timely completion of accident/injury reporting to provincial agencies. Conducts site inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Coordinates worker compensation claims. Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data related to work related personal injury/illness.
  • Coordinates, collects, and compiles sample testing (i.e. air quality, water).
  • Establishes direct lines of communication and maintains effective liaison with partner groups.
  • Processes a variety of materials, and composes routine correspondence such as minutes, memos, bulletins; maintains appropriate confidentiality.
  • Answers telephone enquiries, takes messages, and provides information, assistance and support to staff related to work performed.
  • Performs a variety of general clerical duties. Maintains office records by entering data into a computer, updating files and checking a variety of materials for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assists with the coordination of training programs/seminars (such as WHMIS, CPR/First Aid, etc.), and medical testing (such as hearing tests, vaccination clinics, etc.) by scheduling room bookings and registering participants.
  • Processes invoices and reconciles monthly transactions. Maintains records of simple financial transactions. Orders and distributes health and safety equipment.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of one year post-secondary Occupational Health and Safety program, plus two years related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
  • Working knowledge of policies and regulations governing occupational health and safety operations.
  • Valid B.C. Driver's License (Class 5).
  • Demonstrated ability to type at a minimum speed of 60 wpm net.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer operation and software applications related to work performed.

This position is 35 hours/week. Hours of work are Monday-Friday, 08:30-16:00. The hourly rate of pay is $34.40 per hour. Qualified applicants should apply by submitting a resume and cover letter in ONE PDF document via email to:
