Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional leader to join NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde as Head of Sustainability.

This permanent post is based within the Estates and Facilities Directorate and offers a unique chance to lead the strategic direction of sustainability across one of the UK’s largest health boards.

We are seeking a highly motivated, visionary, and experienced professional with a strong background in sustainability, policy development, and environmental management. You will bring a proven track record of delivering complex programmes in large, multi-site organisations, ideally within industry or similar sized public sector organisations.

As Head of Sustainability, you will be responsible for leading a team that is driving NHS GGC’s Net Zero ambitions, developing and implementing the Board’s Sustainability Strategy, and ensuring compliance with national and international reporting standards. You will manage a dedicated team of professionals and oversee work streams that support Scottish Government Delivery Plan Objectives and the Board’s Sustainability Strategy.

This senior leadership role requires excellent communication, change management, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement skills. You will work closely with senior management, Scottish Government, local authorities, and external partners to influence positive outcomes.

You should be educated to master’s level (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Management, Engineering, or Sustainability, and hold full membership or Chartered Status with a relevant professional institute (IEMA or CIWEM). Expert knowledge of climate change legislation, ISO management systems (14001 & 9001), ISSB standards, and Risk Management is essential. Experience in regulated industry is strongly preferred.

Please note that the recruitment process will include pre-interview assessments for shortlisted candidates, prior to formal interviews. Details will be provided to shortlisted applicants.

In return, we offer a dynamic and supportive working environment where your expertise will shape the future of sustainable healthcare in Scotland.

For informal contact, please reach out to Martin Johnston, Head of Sustainability, at Martin.Johnston@nhs.scot or call 07976859697.
