Job summary

OnX is seeking a Head of Software Engineering to lead our Edmonton-based team in a fully onsite, permanent role. You will drive modernization across platforms, APIs, and core systems while improving delivery reliability, software quality, and DevOps enablement.

Suitable candidates will have extensive leadership experience, a strong track record in automation and AI-assisted development, and expertise in governance, SDLC, CI/CD, and working with vendor partnerships.

Qualifications

• 10 years of experience in software engineering or technology leadership.
• 5+ years of leadership experience managing engineering teams or delivery organizations.
• Experience leading teams across modern digital platforms, APIs, legacy/core systems, and hybrid environments.
• Proven modernization of engineering practices through automation, including AI-assisted development.
• Strong understanding of SDLC governance, DevOps, CI/CD, QA automation, release management, and operational support models.
• Experience balancing modernization with proven legacy platforms while maintaining continuity and reducing risk.
• Experience establishing governance, delivery standards, and scalable operating models.
• Experience working with external software delivery vendors and partnerships.
• Experience with React, Node.js, API-first integration, IBM i RPG, GitHub CI/CD, cloud-native/hybrid delivery is a plus.
• Experience in regulated industries (financial services, insurance) is a plus.
• Proven people leadership and change management with strong communication and stakeholder management.

Requirements

• :10 years of experience in software engineering, application delivery, or technology leadership roles is required
• .Minimum of five years of leadership experience managing engineering teams, software delivery organizations, or enterprise application environments is required
• .Experience leading engineering teams across modern digital platforms, APIs, legacy/core systems, and hybrid technology environments is required
• .Demonstrated track record of modernizing engineering practice through automation, including practical adoption of AI-assisted development, is required
• .Strong understanding of software engineering practices, SDLC governance, DevOps, CI/CD, QA automation, release management, and operational support models is required
• .Experience modernizing enterprise application ecosystems while respecting and sustaining proven legacy and core platforms and balancing operational continuity and business risk is required
• .Experience establishing engineering governance, delivery standards, operational accountability, and scalable engineering operating models is required
• .Experience leading or governing external software delivery vendors and engineering partnerships is required
• .Experience working with technologies and environments such as React, Node.js, API-first integration, IBMi/RPG ecosystems, GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, QA automation, and cloud-native and hybrid cloud delivery models is considered an asset
• .Experience operating within financial services, insurance, or other regulated industries is considered an asset
• .Proven people leadership, organizational development, and change leadership, with strong communication and stakeholder management skills, to drive a high-performing engineering culture is required
