Job summary

Canopy Growth is seeking a Head of Operations Finance to lead the cost accounting, standard costing, and inventory valuation activities. This role partners with Operations, Commercial Finance, Accounting and IT to drive accurate reporting and strong internal controls.

The successful candidate will manage budgeting, forecasting, and operational metrics in collaboration with the FP&A team and will guide the implementation of best practices across finance globally.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting/Business or equivalent.
• CPA/CMA certification or equivalent strongly preferred.
• 10+ years of relevant and progressive experience in cost accounting and management.
• Demonstrated strong understanding of US GAAP for inventory valuation and reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop the Operations Finance & Cost Accounting teams.
• Review actual / standard costing activities and inventory valuations.
• Provide leadership for global operations finance including cost accounting and best practices.
• Collaborate with Commercial Finance, Operations, Accounting, IT and facility GMs.
• Oversee ERP projects and other systems implementations.
• Support quarterly physical inventory counts and budget/forecast processes.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President, Finance, the Head of Operations Finance is a key member of the Finance team. This role oversees the operations finance and cost accounting functions at Canopy Growth and maintains close partnerships with Operations, Commercial Finance, Accounting, and IT as the business continues to evolve.

Through close collaboration with key stakeholders, the Head of Operations Finance will own standard costing and inventory valuation activities, annual operations budgets, forecasting, and key operational reporting metrics in partnership with the FP&A team. This role will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to support accurate reporting and the development of operational financial metrics. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of internal controls and policies and will help drive best practices across the finance organization.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and develop the Operations Finance & Cost Accounting teams.

• Review actual / standard costing activities along with inventory valuations

• Provide leadership for the global operations finance function, including cost accounting, and develop/implement best in class processes

• Collaborate and provide finance support for key stakeholders throughout the business including Commercial Finance, Operations, Accounting, IT and facility GM’s

• Business lead with ERP project and other systems implementations

• Work closely with management team on expansion and acquisition analysis

• Oversee the maintenance of an operations departmental costing model used for:

  • Budget variance review to support site leads (GM and department leads)

  • Inventory valuations,

  • Monthly spend analysis and close processing

• Oversee the development and maintenance of standard costing allocations and application rates (approve), as well as maintenance costing records

• Support & collaborate with Commercial finance teams on product costings for new products and pricing decisions.

• Oversee the support of facility GMs on development and reporting of through-put measures, yields, and other key measures

• Lead the operations month-end and year-end closing, including review of inventory adjustments, departmental allocations, and associated audit support

• Support operations with the quarterly physical inventory counts

• Support operations with the preparation of production facility annual budgets and periodic forecasts

• Identify and recommend to senior management cost-effective solutions

• Continuously evaluate industry trends and competitive landscape to stay current

• Participate in other high-profile, strategic projects as required

• Other duties as assigned

Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting/Business or equivalent required;

• CPA/CMA certification or equivalent strongly preferred;

• 10+ years of relevant and progressive experience; both in cost accounting and management

• Demonstrated strong understanding of US GAAP for purposes of inventory valuation and reporting

• Cannabis industry knowledge preferred, (or agriculture / manufacturing – processing)

• Proficiency in Excel required; experience with Sage, Elevated Signals, Ample, Sage 50 or QuickBooks a plus

• Occasional travel required.

• Very strong analytical skills, research skills, and business acumen – ability to rapidly come up to speed on new issues and identify the critical questions to be addressed;

• Strong communications skills and ability to communicate and influence all levels in the organization including a broad base of finance and business partners;

• Comfort working through ambiguity and in a rapidly changing environment;
