Job summary

The City of Winnipeg is seeking a Head Instructor Guard to organize and direct aquatic programming and lifeguarding at municipal facilities. You will plan schedules, ensure patron and staff safety, manage training and discipline, and respond to emergencies.

This role reports to the Pool Supervisor and involves reporting, HR tasks, and liaising with community groups. Qualified candidates will have lifeguarding and aquatics instruction experience, strong leadership, and the ability to work both

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent training/experience.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and Active Net.

Job description

Under the direction of the Pool Supervisor, the Head Instructor Guard organizes and directs aquatic programming and lifeguarding activities at Aquatic facilities. This includes program planning and scheduling, patron and staff safety, training and discipline, communicating with patrons and responding to emergency situations as required. The Head Instructor Guard responds directly to complaints, prepares reports and is responsible for a range of human resource activities.

As the Head Instructor Guard, you will:

• Supervise and perform lifeguarding duties and assist in the performance of a variety of routine maintenance functions as required.
• Administer First Aid as required.
• Plan and supervise programs within assigned area of responsibility and perform administrative duties related to the programs including monitoring staff qualifications and use of Active Net software.
• Assist in the planning and/or conducting of in-service training clinics, pool testing and orientation of aquatic staff as required.
• Assist in supervision and organization of facility program registration.
• Supervise and train staff including assisting with staff scheduling and timekeeping and conducting staff performance appraisals.
• Maintain and prepare pool records and exports data as required.
• Conduct special aquatic courses as assigned.
• Perform regular inspections / audits of site(s), ensure pool is being maintained as a safe and sanitary environment, assist with the establishment of quality and safety standards, and ensure compliance with all set standards.
• Operate within Departmental safety policies and guidelines and ensure that all activities are conducted within these guidelines.
• Collect user fees and handle cash as required.
• Participate in planning and implementing aquatic programs and services.
• Assess needs and order program equipment, supplies and resource materials.
• Liaise with community groups, agencies, organizations and civic staff in matters pertaining to aquatic programs and services.

Your education and qualifications include:

• Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Ability to use computer software systems. Basic proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, completion of Active Net training, and other programs as required.
• Demonstrated ability to organize, effectively plan, set priorities, direct staff and impart leadership skills.
• Experience lifeguarding and teaching aquatics programs.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision and in a team environment and to exercise sound judgement and discretion.
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet/manage deadlines, effectively plan and schedule work, and work in a team atmosphere.
• Ability to perform administrative functions.
• Ability to supervise, provide feedback, motivate, and function as a member of a large team.
• Demonstrated knowledge of principles, practices and techniques employed in water safety and life-saving activities, pool operations and safety and security protocols.
• Demonstrated ability to provide emergency medical care consistently and without error at a high level.
• Working knowledge and understanding of the Public Health Act-Swimming Pools and other Water Recreational Facilities Regulation; the Provincial Workplace Safety and Health Act; and Workplace Safety and Health Regulations.
• Must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of regulations and City By-Law as they relate to the general facility operation, including but not limited to - building/fire/health codes and pool regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
• Must have demonstrated acceptable attendance and job performance relevant to this position.
• Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
• Ability and willingness to take additional training as required.

  • Swim for Life Instructor
  • Lifesaving Instructor
  • Standard (Intermediate) First Aid Certificate (St. John Ambulance or Red Cross only)
  • CPR Level C / AED Certificate (St. John Ambulance or Red Cross only). Renewed annually
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
