We have a great opportunity in our Corporate Communications Department. We are seeking to hire an experienced Head of Corporate Communications!

What You Will Do

As the Head of Corporate Communications, you will be responsible for leading all internal and external communications for the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). You will oversee a team of professionals located across multiple worksites, including Transit Control. Also, you will provide strategic communications advice and develop tactics to promote awareness and understanding of major corporate initiatives among employees and the general public.

In addition, you will be responsible for ensuring a cohesive narrative of all the TTC’s work across the organization. The Corporate Communications department is responsible for defining the mode, style, and timing of communication strategies and providing professional advice and strategic counsel to executives, senior management, and the TTC Board. As well, takes an active role in managing the reputation of the TTC and must be media savvy with a strong understanding of proactive media relations. The role also oversees individuals working in the TTC’s Transit Control Centre, which are responsible for real-time communications on the TTC’s operations.

You will be working closely with the Marketing & Customer Experience team to deliver on employee events to boost engagement and promote a culture of belonging at the TTC. This includes events with all three levels of government, therefore, experience with government protocol and overseeing major podium events is required.

As the Head of Corporate Communications, you must be well-versed in diversity and inclusion principles, and will be responsible for leading all internal communications related to diversity, inclusion, and equity.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

• Completion of a University Degree or College Diploma in a related field (Communications or Public Relations) or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
• Extensive and progressively responsible experience in a related Corporate Communications and Public Affairs environment at a senior level dealing with the media, crisis communication, and issues management, ideally within the public sector.
• Specific experience in the public transit industry is an asset.
• Extensive knowledge in strategic planning and issues management with respect to matters affecting corporate relationships (government/public/media).
• Extensive knowledge of federal and provincial legislative and regulatory processes, business and public administration/relations, and fiscal and human relations concepts/practices combined with a thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable human resources policies and legislation/regulations regarding safety, employment, municipal freedom of information, etc.
• Extensive knowledge of executive communications including building thought leadership programs.
• Experience with leading events, including employee events, government announcements, and press conferences among others.
• Superior communication (written, oral and editing), interpersonal, presentation, media relations, and facilitation skills as well as seasoned negotiating/lobbying skills.
• Proven ability to influence and build collaborative relationships across a broad spectrum of stakeholders both internally and externally to the organization.
• Highly computer literate.
• Understanding and knowledge of social media and appropriate uses of online tools needed to positively communicate and engage with the public, customers, and stakeholders.
• A proven record in formulating complex budgets and strategic goals, objectives, policies, and long-range programs.
• Sound judgment, excellent analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working on diversity and inclusion initiatives would be considered an asset.
• Ability to manage change effectively and develop messaging for multiple, diverse stakeholders; be decisive and effectively manage in a rapidly changing environment.
• Proven project management and leadership skills and the ability to provide strategic communications advice to senior-level staff.
• Must have or rapidly acquire a thorough knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, TTC policies and procedures, and organizational structure, functions, and operations applicable to the work.
