Job Description

WSP’s Occupational Hygiene and Safety (OHS) team is seeking a Hazardous Materials Practice Lead and Project Manager for our growing hazardous materials practice in British Columbia. The successful candidate will work within our broader Occupational Health and Safety team and engage with national and international professional practice networks.

Our hazardous materials practice includes inspections, surveys, abatement, and demolition support primarily for asbestos, PCBs, metals, water intrusion, microbial growth, and other regulated materials. The practice is expanding its clientele and staff. WSP does not directly perform hazardous materials abatement services.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Managing hazardous materials and microbial assessments, along with abatement/remediation oversight.
  2. Leading the practice, managing client accounts, and driving business development.
  3. Training, mentoring, and coaching team members.
  4. Advising clients as a subject matter expert on hazardous material abatement.
  5. Leading hazardous material components of large projects and proposals.
  6. Overseeing the preparation and review of management plans and specifications.
  7. Managing on-site inspections and monitoring during projects.
  8. Preparing reports, programs, and proposals.
  9. Collaborating on quality standards and procedures.
  10. Supporting regional and national practice initiatives.
  11. Potentially serving on the WSP Asbestos Safety Board.
  12. Staying current with industry knowledge, regulations, and legislation, and communicating these effectively.
Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Hazardous Materials Management, or related fields.
  • 10+ years’ experience in hazardous materials work, especially large-scale asbestos projects.
  • Experience managing client accounts and projects in a consulting environment.
  • Positive attitude and commitment to technical excellence.
  • Leadership experience with technical staff.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Formal hazardous materials training (e.g., WorkSafeBC Level S, AHERA, Alberta Asbestos Worker, etc.).
  • Excellent knowledge of applicable regulations and standards.
  • Ability to interpret and write specifications, reports, and drawings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to travel up to two weeks per month.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain security clearances.
  • Legal right to work in Canada.
Compensation:

Salary range in British Columbia: $102,100 - $140,400. Final salary varies based on education, experience, and other factors.
