Job description

As the Hazardous Energy Coordinator you will safeguard anyone who is required to work on equipment that contains hazardous energy within the Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility (IPTF). To be successful in this role, you will need to be very familiar with the existing plant and be trained in the hazardous energy isolation processes required. As the Hazardous Energy Coordinator you will also be training others on these processes.

What will you do?

  • Issue safe work permits for all contractors and City of Edmonton employees at the IPTF to comply with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) code regulations such as lockout tag out, hot work, confined space, etc.
  • Perform hazardous energy isolation for all systems using technical data
  • Provide technical training, support and mentorship for all City of Edmonton employees and contractors with the Hazardous Energy Isolation Program and safe work permits
  • Monitor the operating area for abnormal mechanical or process-related conditions
  • Assist in the preparation of equipment for cleaning and maintenance
  • Enter work notifications for equipment and unit repairs into SAP Plant Maintenance
  • Perform safe start‐up and shut down of equipment by following proper procedures
  • Review, update and develop written standards for safety programs such as hot work, confined space, Hazardous Energy Isolation, etc.
  • Checks plans, permits and other documents to ensure they conform with regulations and standards
  • Schedule and facilitate safety orientations for City employees and contractors
  • Conduct and lead OH&S safety inspections
  • Participate in the preparation of hazard assessments and incident investigations, as needed
  • Assist with the preparation of facility fire safety plans and their annual review
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of coursework for training staff with the control of hazardous energy isolation
  • 5 years of related processing plant experience (conveyors, shredders, trommels, screens etc.) and training in OH&S mandated lock out processes that are required to prevent injury to people working on equipment in a plant environment

  • Strong interpersonal, diplomatic, and assertiveness skills to be an effective trainer and deal with safety infractions
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to deliver training presentations, draft reports, and create training materials
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and related Codes is required
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Calendar, etc.) and SAP Plant Maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability to plan work and lead and direct Operators in regards to safe work practices, procedures and safe work plans in day-to-day operations

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Should use of a personal vehicle be required for work-related travel, reimbursement will be in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the applicant to obtain business use auto insurance
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Applicants must have access to reliable transportation to commute to and from the workplace as there is no public transportation to this location
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform assigned duties in all weather conditions

Up to 2 temporary full- time positions for up to 11 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary: $38.590 (Hourly)

Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CUPE and will be forthcoming shortly.
