Job description

The Opportunity :

This position is accountable for managing the overall results of the Wetaskiwin hatchery, ensuring the facility produces a quality product that meets customer needs while adhering to all regulatory guidelines and maintaining the lowest costs.

The Hatchery Manager is responsible for fostering a culture of continuous improvement to support regulatory, animal husbandry and welfare practices, quality (PCP), health & safety, marketing board standards, and human resource standards. The role includes short- and long-term planning for capital investment, budget development and ownership, human resource planning and development, and facility maintenance to achieve results effectively and profitably.

Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life :

Accountable for production costs, labor utilization, yield, results of Operations Cost Improvement initiatives, and Six Sigma initiatives.

Ensures adherence to PCP and relevant Food Safety requirements, including completing audit targets.

Continuously improves operating costs or processes using CI / Six Sigma methodologies.

Maintains and fosters a productive and positive employee relations environment through effective implementation of employee relations initiatives.

Development of salaried and hourly staff :

Develops, recommends, and implements capital improvements for the hatchery, including preparing and executing a Hatchery Capital budget.

Meets or exceeds customer service level targets through process synchronization across all functional areas, from allocation setting to product delivery.

Manages the performance of the cross-functional team through effective HR processes and leadership initiatives.

Sets and meets all Health & Safety targets.

Supports marketing and product development initiatives for new products.

Maintains compliance with CFIA, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Health & Safety, Marketing Boards, Ministry of Transportation, and other legislative bodies affecting hatchery performance.

Monitors and communicates advancements in genetics, equipment, and sanitation through contacts with breeders, equipment and supply companies, and industry organizations.

Ensures an adequate and balanced supply of raw materials to the hatchery.

Develops and adheres to the budget; responsible for hatchery EBIT.

The team continuously evaluates results, policies, programs, procedures, and resource effectiveness to ensure achievement of strategic goals and product quality at the lowest possible cost.

  • Post-secondary education in food science, business, engineering, or operations management
  • 5-10 years of management experience
  • 5-7 years in a management role
  • Strong communication skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement
  • Proven decision-making skills using analytical tools like SWOT analysis and Six Sigma metrics
