Job description

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council’s Teechuktl (Mental Health) Program is seeking a full-time Harm Reduction Outreach Worker (term to March 31, 2027) to provide culturally based support within the Nuu-chah-nulth Region. The role emphasizes supporting individuals, families, and communities, especially First Nations people involved in high-risk lifestyles. The worker will communicate with service providers, coordinate activities to promote wellness and healing within a culturally safe framework, and work evenings and weekends. Outreach support will be provided both in community and away from home, with the position based in Port Alberni and requiring travel along Vancouver Island’s coast, including by vehicle on gravel roads, boat, float plane, and helicopter. The work operates on a 4-on, 3-off shift rotation, with daily hours of 9.75 (including a one-hour meal break), and may include Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Saturday shifts.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Establish relationships with persons at risk and provide outreach services as needed.
  • Provide information on drugs, alcohol, opioids, harm reduction, and available services.
  • Collaborate with service providers to develop individualized, strength-based, culturally competent support plans.
  • Possess knowledge of addiction services.
  • Make referrals for urban individuals to appropriate resources.
  • Support ongoing treatment, including follow-up (e.g., appointment reminders, transportation).
  • Develop and facilitate educational workshops and group discussions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum diploma in Human Services or Addictions, with 3-5 years of relevant experience, preferably with at-risk populations.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, complex and intergenerational trauma.
  • Compassionate personality with the ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong organization and time management skills; computer literate.
  • Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, traditions, or being a First Nations person is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle required.
  • Provide references and criminal record check.
