Job summary

Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN) is seeking a dependable Handyman to support maintenance across multiple properties in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The role involves carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring, doors/windows, mold remediation, and vacant-unit prep, with an emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.

The successful candidate will work independently, manage multiple work orders, and collaborate with the Property Management team to ensure timely, move-in ready units and well-maintained

Qualifications

• High school diploma preferred.
• Proven handyman/work in building maintenance, renovations, landscaping, or property maintenance.
• Strong carpentry skills and practical knowledge of residential building systems.
• Proficiency in safe use of common hand and power tools.
• Experience in drywall, painting, flooring, doors/windows, mold remediation, and vacant-unit prep.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance and repairs across properties.
• Inspect for maintenance, repair, safety, and cleanliness issues.
• Respond to work orders and complete repairs promptly and professionally.
• Carry out interior and exterior repairs and maintenance.
• Maintain clean, safe, organized work sites.
• Communicate needs and material requirements to Property Management.
• Assist with inspections, renovations, unit turnovers, and ongoing improvements.
• Conduct carpentry repairs and installations (trim, baseboards, moulding, shelving, cabinets).
• Measure, cut, fit, and install wood and other materials.
• Repair drywall, prep walls for painting, and finish surfaces.
• Install/repair flooring and doors/windows and related components.
• Identify mold/moisture signs and perform remediation per procedures.
• Follow containment, PPE, cleaning, disposal, and remediation protocols.
• Maintain grounds: mowing, trimming, pruning, and seasonal clean-up.
• Work in occupied and vacant units; prepare units for occupancy.
• Safely operate tools and equipment; keep records of work.
• Adhere to safety policies and contribute to a well-run office environment.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance and repairs throughout managed properties.
• Inspect properties and identify maintenance, repair, safety, and cleanliness concerns.
• Respond to work orders and complete repairs in a timely and professional manner.
• Perform general repairs and maintenance on interior and exterior areas.
• Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas.
• Communicate repair needs, material requirements, and potential concerns to the Property Management team.
• Assist with property inspections, renovations, unit turnovers, and ongoing property improvements.
• Perform general carpentry repairs and installations, including trim, baseboards, moulding, shelving, cabinets, framing, and other wood components.
• Measure, cut, fit, and install wood and other building materials accurately.
• Remove, install, repair, tape, mud, sand, and finish drywall.
• Prepare and paint walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and other interior and exterior surfaces.
• Install, repair, and replace flooring, including laminate, vinyl plank, tile, carpet, transitions, and baseboards.
• Install, repair, adjust, and replace interior and exterior doors, windows, locks, hinges, closers, seals, screens, and related components.
• Identify signs of mold, moisture, and water damage.
• Complete mold treatment and remediation in accordance with company procedures and applicable health and safety requirements.
• Follow proper containment, personal protective equipment, cleaning, disposal, and remediation procedures.
• Identify and report moisture sources and other underlying concerns that may contribute to mold growth.
• Inspect vacant rental units and complete the repairs, cleaning, painting, flooring, and maintenance required to prepare them for occupancy.
• Ensure vacant units are clean, safe, functional, and move‑in ready within established timelines.
• Maintain lawns, yards, gardens, and exterior areas of managed properties.
• Cut grass and trim shrubs, bushes, hedges, and other vegetation.
• Prune or cut trees only within the employee’s training, qualifications, and applicable safety requirements.
• Remove fallen branches, leaves, weeds, garbage, litter, and other debris.
• Assist with seasonal property maintenance, including spring and fall clean‑up and snow and ice removal.
• Identify and report hazardous trees, branches, drainage issues, and other exterior property concerns.
• Safely operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, ladders, lawn equipment, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
• Maintain accurate records of completed work, materials used, and outstanding maintenance requirements.
• Follow all applicable organizational policies and workplace health and safety requirements.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Proven experience in general handyman work, building maintenance, construction, renovation, landscaping, or property maintenance.
• Strong carpentry skills and practical knowledge of residential building systems.
• Proficiency in the safe use of common hand tools and power tools.
• Demonstrated experience in carpentry, drywall installation and finishing, patching and painting, flooring, doors and windows, general building repairs, mold remediation, grounds maintenance, and vacant‑unit preparation.
• Ability to troubleshoot maintenance concerns and determine appropriate repair solutions.
• Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems is considered an asset.
• Relevant trade school, apprenticeship, landscaping, construction, or maintenance training is considered an asset.
• Certification or training in mold remediation, occupational health and safety, electrical work, plumbing, landscaping, or another skilled trade is considered an asset.
• Chainsaw operation or tree-work training is considered an asset where tree cutting is required.
• First Aid and CPR certification is considered an asset.
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training is considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work will be performed at multiple properties managed by the organization.
• Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions.

• The employee may occasionally be required to respond to urgent or emergency maintenance situations.
• Work may involve exposure to dust, debris, construction materials, cleaning products, moisture, mold‑affected areas, and outdoor environmental conditions.
