Location – Ottawa, ON

The Guideway Technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and replacing mainline and yard track, special trackwork, switch machines, structures, drainage, walkways, fencing, mechanical equipment, pumps, and control devices to ensure safe and reliable operation. Responsibilities include inspecting tracks, bridges, embankments, fences, and level crossings, checking for obstacles or worn areas, clearing snow/ice, and reporting issues for correction.

The Technician maintains system assets and support equipment according to procedures, drawings, and specifications, and operates and maintains shop equipment and instruments. They provide first-line maintenance response, assist in installation, testing, and commissioning of assets, and inspect and approve work by contractors or suppliers. They recommend and implement measures to improve asset performance.

This position is safety-critical. Fitness for duty is required.

Your Role Within The Team
  • Apply all AtkinsRealis and local EHS rules.
  • Perform predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance on railway track systems.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair yard and mainline tracks, switches, drainage, fences, and related systems.
  • Operate machines to lay, maintain, and repair railway tracks, including snow clearing.
  • Identify safety-critical defects, recommend safety measures, and report critical issues.
  • Maintain technical proficiency in system and equipment aspects.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform welding, grinding, and rail preparation tasks.
  • Implement work permits and act as Person in Charge (PIC) of work zones.
  • Escort contractors, provide safety briefings, and conduct quality inspections.
  • Operate and maintain cranes and heavy equipment.
  • Record inspections and work, generate work orders, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Assist in planning work and setting priorities.
  • Support emergency responses and track clearing during severe weather.
  • Train and assess other personnel, maintain tooling and safety equipment, and manage inventory.
  • Participate in commissioning and emergency response activities.
  • Perform other maintenance duties as required.

The Ideal Candidate
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years' experience.
  • Experience with railway track systems, valid Track Inspection Certificate, welding or mechanic certification.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic measurements and communicate effectively in English.
  • Capable of lifting heavy equipment, with a valid Ontario G driver’s license.
  • Pass safety and federal trainings.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Flexible to work nights, weekends, holidays, shifts, and on-call.
