Job summary

The Nunavut Department of Education, Kivalliq School Operations, invites applications for a Guidance Counsellor based in Whale Cove at Inuglak School. You will support student well-being, planning, and graduation by building strong community relationships and collaborating with school staff.

Ideal candidates will have a B.Ed., teaching certification recognized by Nunavut, and at least three years of classroom experience, with ability to communicate in Inuktitut and work within a bilingual or ESL

Located in the picturesque hamlet of Whale Cove, Nunavut, Inuglak School serves the local community. The school has a population of approximately 185 students in a K-12 setting with a staff of 23. The school and community are steeped in a rich history of Inuit culture.

Required Qualifications

Education & Certification

• Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree
• A certificate/degree or equivalent coursework in counselling will be considered an asset.
• Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience
• Valid teaching certificate recognized by, or eligible for certification in Nunavut (International educated teachers who do not hold a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials evaluated through Candidates are not expected to meet every qualification; relevant experience and a commitment to community-centred education are valued.)

Language and Cultural Assets

• Ability to communicate in Inuktitut (verbal and written)
• Experience teaching in a bilingual or ESL environment
• Experience teaching in cross-cultural, or northern-Canada contexts
• Experience supporting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit-based education.

Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment

• Experience providing guidance to students on graduation requirements and course selection
• Experience in differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
• Training or experience using current assessment methods to guide learning
• Experience in creating a positive learning environment using classroom management practices and approaches (e.g. Restitution, Tribes, Positives Effective Behavior Supports)
• Proficiency in the use of educational technology

Relationships and Student Engagement

• Experience in building respectful relationships with students, families, colleagues, and stakeholders
• Experience in fostering student wellbeing and engagement
• Experience in engaging with students beyond the classroom, toward post-secondary and labour market opportunities

Collaboration and professional practice

• Experience in planning instruction and student supports through
• Experience working collaboratively as part of a school team
• Experience learning and contributing in a shared, community-focused

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary Range: $93,906 - $147,243 (based on experience)
• Nunavut Northern Allowance for Whale Cove, Nunavut : $21,564

Conditions of Employment

• Applicants currently employed by the Government of Nunavut must hold a valid Nunavut teaching certificate.
• Applicants from outside Nunavut must provide a copy of a current public-school teaching certificate from a Canadian jurisdiction recognized by the Nunavut Department of Education. Applications that do not include this documentation will not be considered.
• Successful candidates must provide a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) dated no more than six months prior to the start date as indicated above.
• All job offers will be contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in Canada
