Job summary

The Township of Langley is currently recruiting a regular full-time Guard to join our RCMP Division, Police Services Department. Reporting to the Manager, Business Support Police Services, in this unionized position you will perform custodial work involving responsibility for guarding prisoners held at the Langley Detachment.

Responsibilities include surveillance, cell searches, fingerprinting and photographing prisoners, property control, and maintaining logs.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12, and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Knowledge of custody, escorting and welfare of prisoners.
• Knowledge of fingerprinting and photography techniques.
• Ability to communicate firmly, discretely and with compassion toward prisoners.
• Ability to respond to individuals in distress with appropriate actions.

Responsibilities

• Maintain surveillance over prisoner activities to ensure safety and security.
• Search and inspect cells before and after prisoner occupancy.
• Assist officers or Deputy Sheriffs during arrival and departure of prisoners.
• Take fingerprints and photographs of prisoners and members of the public.
• Maintain security of prisoner property and arrange dispatch of any found items.
• Monitor cleaning and maintain cleanliness of cells and immediate areas.
• Maintain various files, records and the prisoner logbook.
• Assist members in processing prisoners as required.
• Perform related duties as required.

Reporting to the Manager, Business Support Police Services, in this unionized position you will perform custodial work involving responsibility for guarding prisoners held at the Langley Detachment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain surveillance over prisoner activities to ensure safety and security
• Search and inspect cells before and after prisoner occupancy
• Assist officers or Deputy Sheriffs during the arrival and departure of prisoners
• Take fingerprints and photographs of prisoners and members of the public
• Maintain the security of prisoner’s property and arrange for dispatch of property left behind
• Monitor cleaning by janitors, sweep, mop, hose and disinfect cells, and immediate areas
• Maintain a variety of files, records, and the prisoner logbook
• Assist members in processing prisoners, as required
• Perform related duties as required

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12, and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Sound knowledge of the policies, practices, methods, and procedures related to the control, custody, escorting and welfare of prisoners
• Sound knowledge of techniques used for taking fingerprints and photographs
• Ability to understand and respond to prisoners' needs while communicating with firmness, discretion, and compassion
• Ability to assess and respond appropriately to individuals experiencing mental, physical, or emotional distress
• BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License is considered an asset

RCMP Enhanced Reliability Status is required (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment)

Required Certifications / Licenses

Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.

• Basic (Emergency) First Aid with CPR C and AED Certification
