Job description

Salary Range: $63,900.00 To $119,400.00 Annually

Location: Remote - Anywhere in Canada

Empire Life is looking to hire a Bilingual Group Underwriter III to join our Group Underwriting team! The Group Underwriter Level III ensures company profitability by reviewing and assessing complex requests to quote (Fully insured, ASO, Modular Flex, and Association Plans), ASO surplus requests, Amendments, and Renewals while providing technical expertise, and consultative services to both the Underwriting Teams and external stakeholders. The incumbent is guided by defined procedural practices and works under the direct supervision of the Manager, Group Underwriting (Complex).

What you’ll be working on
  1. Ensure that complex requests to quote, amendment, and renewals are processed accurately and within established turnaround time to support business sales and profitability goals.
  2. Lead quoting, amending, and renewal activity in the complex space with a focus on establishing and growing long term partnerships.
  3. Use experience and judgment, in conjunction with underwriting guidelines, product and service knowledge to determine optimal solutions to meet customer needs and requirements.
  4. Ensure the profitability of group business through the use of subsidy application on both new business, renewals, and amendments.
  5. Develop and present a business case to support pricing decisions; and make decisions on final pricing within defined parameters.
  6. Leads the development and communication of process and practice changes, including maintenance of the Underwriting Guidelines and other documents relevant to the functional unit.
  7. Provides consistent interpretation of group insurance policy terms to customers and distribution partners in support of divisional goals.
  8. Work collaboratively with other team members to support processing requirements.
  9. Provides consultation and problem resolution for the business units and the distribution teams on risk-related issues.
  10. Act as primary contact and collaborates with Actuary, Leadership, Distribution, and Reinsurance providers.
  11. Proactively engages with both internal and external stakeholders to engage in discussions to support both client acquisition and retention.
  12. Consult with Level II Underwriters to ensure coverage decisions are appropriate and made in a timely manner.
  13. Interacts with reinsurance providers to spread risks on retention amounts that exceed the Empire Life retention limit.
  14. Practices consultative Underwriting that engages in proactive collaboration with internal and external distribution partners to develop creative solutions within defined parameters to support and achieve business objectives.
What we’re looking for you to have
  1. Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
  2. 7+ years of work experience in the group insurance/financial services industry.
  3. Experience in rate Life and LTD coverage.
  4. Proven knowledge of group benefits products, contractual provisions, risk assessment, and pricing methodologies.
  5. Demonstrated experience in a group sales and service environment.
  6. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and able to navigate a CRM platform.
  7. Well-developed customer relations skills.
  8. GBA or CEBS Designation.
  9. Completion of a university degree or college diploma in a relevant field.
  10. Good working experience in financial analysis and trend analysis.
  11. Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  12. Ability to think logically, analyze, and solve problems.
  13. Ability to organize/schedule both people and information.
  14. Creative problem solver / data-based root cause solution bias.
