Purpose and accountability

This position supports the individual underwriting of the Special Markets business and is primarily responsible for new business underwriting and statistics. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of Manager, Administration.

Purpose and accountability

This position supports the individual underwriting of the Special Markets business and is primarily responsible for new business underwriting and statistics. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of Manager, Administration.

Summary Of Duties
  • Assess Life, EHB and Critical Illness applications for the line of business within the Company by :
  • Utilizing the AM system (Application Management) in the day to day management of insureds that are being underwritten.
  • Studying complete files, determining requirements based on age, insurance amount, medical, lifestyle, and financial profile.
  • Evaluating underwriting evidence such as paramedical exams, blood profiles, urinalysis, attending Physician statements, and requesting additional information if needed.
  • Coding and reviewing MIB codes.
  • Making medical decisions and providing decisions on files.
  • Reviewing applications with Medical Directors and referring applications when necessary.
  • Classifying proposed insureds into categories: standard, substandard, postponed, or declined.
  • Determining if ratings or exclusions can be applied based on contract provisions.
  • Providing ongoing training to other underwriters.
  • Meeting with medical advisors for complex cases.
  • Approving and verifying files requiring co-signature: Life and AD&D – up to $1,000,000; CI – up to $500,000.
  • Referring files to reinsurers when necessary.
Deliver quality customer service by :
  • Meeting set turnaround times.
  • Providing clear written and verbal communication to stakeholders.
  • Explaining and defending underwriting decisions, discussing alternatives with clients and staff.
  • Updating AM system promptly and accurately.
  • Recommending system and process improvements.
Protect the Company’s financial interests by :
  • Monitoring business quality and compliance.
  • Reporting suspicious trends.
  • Following underwriting standards and procedures.
  • Explaining and defending decisions to staff and physicians.
Qualifications :
  • University degree plus 1 year insurance experience and willingness to pursue industry designations (FALU, FLMI, etc.).
  • Minimum 6-8 years industry experience, including LOMA 1 courses, with willingness to pursue further designations.
  • Successful completion of LOMA UND385 course.
