Position Title: Group Long Term Disability Claims Specialist
Reports To: Manager, Life & Disability Claims
Department: Group Life & Disability Claims
Term: Permanent Full-Time
Start Date: June 23, 2025

Work Arrangements: This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON, a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement, and some roles may require more in-office presence.

We’re looking for a polished communicator and decision-maker who can develop creative solutions to complex problems, demonstrate empathy, and work collaboratively towards common goals. What you will be doing:

  1. Analyze medical, functional, employment, and contractual information to make timely and accurate decisions on Long Term Disability (LTD) claims.
  2. Manage open LTD claims using problem-solving and analytical skills to facilitate timely resolution.
  3. Calculate benefits payable, making adjustments as needed, including offsets for rehabilitation earnings, CPP Disability Benefits, and overpayment calculations.
  4. Identify and implement cost-effective case management tools to assist disabled employees, such as Rehabilitation Interventions, Functional Abilities Evaluations, Independent Medical Examinations, and Medical Consultant Referrals.
  5. Provide superior written and verbal customer service, ensuring accurate, well-documented, clear, and concise files.
  6. Communicate frequently with plan sponsors, members, advisors, marketing managers, medical and legal professionals.
  7. Participate actively in client meetings.
  8. Communicate professionally and empathetically with clients, often during difficult times, including emotionally charged situations.
  9. Use problem-solving skills to make tough claims decisions and communicate these clearly and understandably.
  10. Demonstrate conflict resolution skills to de-escalate situations with dissatisfied clients.

What you will bring:

  • Proficient spoken and written English.
  • At least 2 years’ experience managing STD and/or LTD claims.
  • University degree or College Diploma in health-related or disability management fields (e.g., nursing, occupational therapy, kinesiology, psychology, social services, occupational health) or equivalent experience in disability claims adjudication.
  • Thorough knowledge of insurance operations.
  • Passion for problem-solving and detailed knowledge of insurance processes.
  • Knowledge of various group contracts is advantageous.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Conflict management and de-escalation skills.
  • Strong personal boundaries and time management skills to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to simplify complex concepts for clients.
  • Proven success in dynamic environments with changing priorities.
  • Bilingual in English/French is an asset.
