Job description

Reports To CFO and Executive Team Job Summary The Group Controller, under the direction of the CFO and Executive Team, will primarily be responsible for the overall financial management, reporting, and control of the group. This includes ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, preparing comprehensive financial statements, managing cash flow, overseeing accounting operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, and providing strategic financial insights to management to drive profitability and growth. The Group Controller will supervise and develop a team of accounting professionals across various dealerships within the group. Key Responsibilities :

  • Financial Reporting & Analysis :

Prepare and present accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement) in accordance with GAAP and manufacturer guidelines.

  • Interpret and analyze financial statements, daily operating controls (DOC), and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify trends, variances, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Provide detailed financial and management reports to the General Manager, Corporate Controller, and other department managers.
  • Keep senior management informed of financial trends, cash needs, and overall business performance.
  • Develop and implement financial models and forecasts to support strategic decision-making, including short- and long-term financial projections.
  • Accounting Operations & Internal Controls :
  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day accounting operations for all dealerships within the group, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and reconciliation activities.

  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard the group's assets, ensure data integrity, and prevent fraud or errors.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and other financial documents prepared by the accounting team.
  • Manage and reconcile all manufacturer-related accounts (warranty claims, rebates, incentives, floorplan assistance, holdbacks, advertising, etc.).
  • Oversee reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts and physical inventories (vehicles, parts).
  • Budgeting & Cash Management :
  • Lead the preparation and management of the group's annual budget, including forecasting and variance analysis.

  • Monitor expenditures against the budget and identify cost-reduction strategies.
  • Develop and maintain an effective cash management system, forecasting cash flow and making recommendations for profitable use of excess cash.
  • Manage banking relationships and financial negotiations for the group.
  • Compliance & Auditing :
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial / state, and local regulations concerning financial reporting, tax obligations (e.g., sales tax, payroll taxes), and dealership operations.

  • Coordinate and oversee internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and support to minimize audit costs.
  • Stay abreast of changes in tax codes, accounting standards (GAAP), and regulatory requirements, advising management on necessary operational adjustments.
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of all required compliance forms.
  • Leadership & Team Development :
  • Supervise, train, mentor, and develop a large accounting and office staff across multiple locations.

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Foster a high-performance, accurate, and productive accounting team.
  • Ensure office personnel are using proper accounting procedures and maintaining accurate records.
  • Technology & Process Improvement :
  • Manage and maximize the utilization of dealership management systems (DMS) and other accounting software (e.g., CDK / ADP, Reynolds and Reynolds).

  • Evaluate and recommend new financial and accounting software to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Streamline accounting processes and procedures to improve efficiency and reduce errors.
  • Qualifications :
  • Education :
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CGA (Certified General Accountant) designation is highly preferred.
  • MBA is a plus.
  • Experience :
  • Minimum of 5-7+ years of progressive financial management experience, with significant experience as a Controller within the retail automotive industry (dealership or group level).

  • Proven experience managing financial operations for multiple dealerships is highly desirable.
  • Extensive knowledge of dealership accounting processes and policies, including month-end close procedures.
  • Strong familiarity with manufacturer, bank, and floorplan reconciliations.
  • Skills & Competencies :
  • Exceptional knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial best practices.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and draw valid conclusions.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and mentoring abilities.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical financial information clearly to non-financial personnel.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in dealership management systems (DMS) such as CDK / ADP, Reynolds and Reynolds.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Integrity, professionalism, and a strong work ethic.
  • Physical Demands :
  • Typically performed in an office environment. Requires prolonged periods of sitting, using a computer, and occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds.
