Job summary

Canada West Ski Areas Association seeks a Snowcat Winch Operator at Whitewater Mountain Resort. You will safely operate winch-equipped snowcats to groom steep terrain and maintain high‑quality ski surfaces, while adhering to safety policies.

The role requires 3+ years of snowcat experience, strong awareness of terrain and weather, and excellent teamwork across the Grooming department. Seasonal full‑time position with November-April duties and competitive compensation.

Qualifications

Job Title: Winch CAT Operator
Location: Whitewater Mountain Resort
Department: Grooming
Reports to: Grooming Supervisor
Employment Status/Type: Seasonal Full Time (November-April)
Compensation: $27-29/hr, depending on experience, alongside further perks

JOB SYNOPSIS:

The Snowcat Winch Operator is a specialized member of the Grooming team responsible for the safe and efficient operation of winch-equipped snowcats to maintain and prepare steep and challenging ski terrain. This position requires a high level of snowcat operating experience, technical skill, situational awareness, and sound judgment while working in complex mountain and winter conditions.

The Winch Operator is responsible for assessing terrain and operating conditions, selecting and utilizing approved winch anchors, safely deploying and operating the winch system, and maintaining clear communication with other operators and team members. The role requires a strong understanding of snowcat capabilities and limitations, winch operating procedures, terrain hazards, snow conditions, and changing weather conditions.

In addition to winch operations, the Snowcat Winch Operator performs regular grooming duties as required and contributes to the overall preparation and maintenance of safe, consistent, and high-quality ski surfaces. The position is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, equipment care, teamwork, and operational standards while supporting the goals of the Grooming department.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safely and efficiently operate winch-equipped snowcats in accordance with established operating procedures, manufacturer guidelines, and company safety policies.
• Perform winch grooming operations on steep, difficult, and technical terrain while maintaining awareness of changing snow, weather, and terrain conditions.
• Assess terrain, snow conditions, hazards, anchor locations, and operating conditions prior to beginning winch operations.
• Safely connect to, inspect, and utilize approved winch anchors and ensure appropriate winch setup before entering winch terrain.
• Monitor winch machine performance, and surrounding hazards throughout winch operations.
• Maintain clear and effective radio communication with other Snowcat Operators, Grooming leadership, and other departments as required.
• Identify and communicate hazards, unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or changes in terrain that may affect grooming operations.
• Complete regular grooming duties outside of winch operations, including trail grooming, pushing snow, maintaining skiways and access routes, and other snow-management activities.
• Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report equipment deficiencies, damage, or maintenance concerns promptly.
• Maintain a high standard of care for snowcats, winch systems, grooming implements, and associated equipment.
• Follow established procedures for working around lifts, buildings, vehicles, snowmaking infrastructure, utilities, and other mountain equipment.
• Work collaboratively with the Grooming team to achieve daily grooming priorities and provide consistent, high-quality ski surfaces.
• Assist with the training and development of Snowcat Operators progressing toward winch operations when requested.
• Maintain accurate operational records, inspections, and other required documentation.
• Respond appropriately to changing weather, snowpack, mechanical, and operational conditions and adjust grooming activities as necessary.
• Participate in meetings, training, safety discussions, and competency assessments as required.
• Perform other duties related to Grooming and Mountain Operations as assigned.
• Respond to operational issues and assist during emergency situations as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION:

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
• Minimum 3 years of experience operating snowcats in a commercial ski area or comparable mountain environment.
• Demonstrated advanced competency in snowcat operation and grooming techniques.
• Previous experience operating a winch-equipped snowcat is strongly preferred.
• High School Diploma Required.
• Valid First Aid certification is considered an asset.
• Experience using GPS grooming and fleet management systems such as Skadii is considered an asset.
• Strong understanding of Snowcat operations, Winch Cat operations and run rebuild programs.

• Proficient with computer systems, digital reporting platforms, and operational software including Skadii.
• Ability to work flexible schedules including overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, storm operations, and extended hours when operationally required.
• Physically capable of working outdoors in challenging winter weather and mountain conditions for extended periods of time.
• Must be willing to work night shifts, weekends, and stat holidays if needed be.
