Job summary

GHD is seeking a Graduate Designer to join its Design & Delivery Organisation in Canada. You will support development of design documentation, drawings, and digital models across transportation projects, including bridges and culverts in partnership with MTO and municipalities.

You will gain hands-on experience with drafting tools, deliver accurate design outputs, and collaborate within a fast-paced consulting environment while mentoring and building your technical capabilities.

Qualifications

• Recent or upcoming college diploma in civil engineering technology.
• Must have a valid G-license.
• 0-2 years of experience related to the role.

Responsibilities

• Data collection and analysis of project information to populate spreadsheets.
• Support design activities by drafting design documentation.
• Draft and produce engineering drawings to communicate design solutions for bridges, culverts, and walls.
• Inspect existing bridges/culverts/retaining walls and prepare reports from site data.
• Liaise with contractors and project owners during design and construction phases.
• Adhere to organizational policies and regulatory codes relevant to the work.
• Engage in training and coaching to build technical skills and processes.
• Perform quantity take-offs to support cost estimates and tender quantities.

As a Graduate Designer, you will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project teams to support the development of design documentation, technical drawings, and digital models across a diverse range of projects. Applying the knowledge gained through your studies, you will help deliver accurate and high-quality design outputs that support project objectives and contribute to successful outcomes for our clients and communities.

This role will work on drafting design documentation for the rehabilitation/replacement of bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other transportation-related structures specifically on projects in partnership with MTO (Ministry of Transportation) and municipalities. They will also undertake bridge inspections, investigations and assessment report preparation. Moreover, you will be someone who flourishes in a fast‑paced and challenging environment with an equally supportive team striving together towards project excellence.

You will gain hands‑on experience using industry‑standard design and drafting tools while developing your understanding of design processes, project delivery, and documentation best practices in a real‑world consulting environment. Through mentorship, collaboration, and exposure to a variety of projects, you will build your technical capability, attention to detail, and understanding of how quality documentation supports the delivery of effective engineering solutions.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

• Data Collection and Analysis:Extract relevant data from information provided by others and input it into spreadsheets or standard formats.
• Design and Conceptualization:Support others by performing prescribed design activities using existing procedures for bridge and culvert design.
• Engineering Drawings:Draft and produce engineering drawings in AutoCAD/Civil 3D/Revit to support the communication, evaluation, and implementation of engineering solutions for bridges, culverts, retaining walls and other transportation structures.
• Inspection of existing bridges, culverts and retaining walls to confirm existing conditions, preparing reports, and organizing large quantities of inspection data.
• Liaise with contractors and owners during design and construction;
• Operational Compliance:Develop working knowledge of the organization's policies and procedures and of regulatory codes and codes of conduct relevant to own work, adhering to mandatory procedures to ensure own work is undertaken to the required standards.
• Personal Capability Building:Develop and maintain excellent process or technical skills by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching.
• Quantity calculationsincluding quantity take offs for engineering drawings to support construction cost estimates and tender quantity calculations.
