Job description

The Governance Director is responsible for executing strategic work according to natural law and qanikitȼi (ʔaq̓am values and principles) for the use and benefit of all ʔaq̓amnik’ (ʔaq̓ampeoplepresent and future generations). This position seeks to support Chief and Council in the implementation of long-term systemic change such that ʔaq̓am plays a credible and legitimate role in decision making, self-determination and exercising sovereignty in ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa. The position oversees a team responsible for:

  • Law development, implementation and enforcement
  • Negotiations/specific claims
  • Relationship development with external partners (government and industry)
  • Title and rights research
  • Policy analysis and development
  • Band Elections
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the Governance Department
  • Maintains regular effective communication amongst and between departments, Chief and Council and Community
  • Work with team to conduct extensive community engagement to ensure community priorities and interests are foundational to all negotiation, consultation and agreements
  • Lead and/or participate in the negotiation of Title and Rights-based Agreements for the benefit of ʔaq̓am
  • Administer ʔaq̓am Specific Claims including working closely with legal counsel and relaying complex information to Chief and Council for decision-making

More About You

The successful candidate will have a Masters Degree in Aboriginal history/rights, Leadership, Public Administration or relevant discipline. A combination of education/Ktunaxa knowledge and lived experience will be considered. Experience managing a team of employees with a minimum 8-10 years’ experience in a similar position at a Senior Level role with proven proficiency in human resources, developing and implementing strategic plans, negotiating agreements, policy and law development. Proof of a clear criminal record, clean driver’s abstract and a Valid Class 5 License.

Salary will commensurate with experience from a range of $114,574 to $151,973 per year and includes a favorable benefits package and pension plan. Hours of work are generally Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 and are to be performed onsite.
