Job summary

Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg seeks a Golf Course Superintendent to drive agronomy programs for its River and Plantation courses. You will lead the agronomy team, manage budgets, and advance data-driven turf management using moisture and soil data technology.

The role emphasizes premium conditioning, high-end hospitality standards, and leadership to navigate change, with a focus on modern turf practices and data-backed irrigation planning.

Qualifications

  • 2- or 4-year degree in Agronomy, Turfgrass Management, or related Plant/Soil Science field.
  • 4 years of experience as Assistant Superintendent, Second Assistant, or equivalent at a premium golf facility.
  • Strong competency in modern turf technology and data tracking software.
  • Must obtain Virginia Pesticide Applicator's License within 90 days of hire.
  • Collaborative leadership style with excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Director of Agronomy to execute the annual maintenance budget and manage capital development plans.
  • supervises, trains, and mentors maintenance staff to foster a positive team dynamic.
  • Leads daily data collection (moisture, firmness, clipping yields) to guide irrigation and agronomic programs.
  • Assists in planning cultural practices, including topdressing and aeration schedules.
  • Oversees daily irrigation system performance and audits field components.
  • Keeps meticulous records of maintenance activities, chemical/fertilizer applications, and costs.
  • Ensures compliance with property policies, safety protocols, and government regulations on chemical applications and watershed protection.
  • Manages and supports diverse department members (Mechanics, Equipment Operators, Foremen, Greenskeepers).

Job description

Position Overview

Working directly alongside the Director of Agronomy, the Golf Course Superintendent will play a pivotal, hands-on role in managing the resort’s (the River and Plantation) courses, leading our agronomic team, and executing our long-range property evolution. The ideal candidate will thrive in a high-end hospitality and resort environment, showing a fierce dedication to premium daily playing conditions.

We are investing in modern data collection and cutting-edge turf technology. Help us develop and lead data-driven programs—utilizing tools like the USGA Moisture Meter and the GS3 Smart Ball to precisely track and map volumetric water content, firmness, and smoothness to dial in our greens.

Key Responsibilities
  • -Collaborates directly with the Director of Agronomy to execute the annual maintenance budget, monitor last year's spending metrics, and manage capital development plans.
  • -Supervises, trains, and mentors the maintenance staff, championing a positive team dynamic and fostering an environment that prioritizes personal staff development.
  • -Leads daily data collection efforts (moisture, firmness, clipping yields) to guide irrigation and agronomic programs.
  • -Assists in the planning, organization, and direction of cultural practices, including topdressing programs, aeration schedules.
  • -Oversees daily irrigation system performance, troubleshooting Rainbird and Toro systems, managing pump station operation, and proactively auditing field components.
  • -Keeps meticulous records of annual maintenance activities, chemical/fertilizer applications, and inventory costs.
  • -Ensures all property policies, safety protocols, and government regulations regarding chemical applications and watershed protection are strictly followed.
  • -Manages and supports diverse department members, including Mechanics, Equipment Operators, Foremen, and Greenskeepers.
Minimum Qualifications
  • -A 2- or 4-year degree or certificate in Agronomy, Turfgrass Management, or a related Plant/Soil Science field.
  • -4 years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent, Second Assistant, or highly experienced Assistant in Training at a premium golf facility.
  • -Strong competency in modern turf technology and data tracking software.
  • -Must possess or be able to obtain a Virginia Pesticide Applicator's License within 90 days of hire.
  • -A strong, collaborative leadership style with excellent communication skills to help navigate periods of operational growth and change.

Salary: $75,000 - $95,000 * (Depending on experience)
