Job summary

Bank of America in Toronto is seeking an Investigator to conduct end-to-end investigations into external financial crimes activities across lines of business. You will collaborate with GFC Risk Management and frontline units to identify risks, prepare case reports, and recommend SAR filings to regulators and law enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Completes investigations ensuring cases meet closure and quality metrics.
  • Submits SARs promptly and accurately to regulators and law enforcement.
  • Reports investigation facts to stakeholders and partners with GFC/FLU to resolve issues.
  • Performs QA, training, guidance, monitoring, and liaison duties in investigative support.
  • Manages a large case inventory prioritizing by risk within SLAs.
  • Researches transaction data and public records to assess normal client activity.
  • Prepares concise reports documenting investigation details.
  • Recommends SAR filings across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Communicates with internal stakeholders and law enforcement to obtain information.
  • Recommends follow-up actions or account closure when risk exceeds tolerance.
  • Willing to take on additional duties as needed.

Job Description

This job is responsible for performing end-to-end investigations or investigations support functions of external financial crimes activities across one or more lines of business. Key responsibilities include conducting routine to complex investigations, including fraud committed by external parties, money laundering, or terrorist financing and acting as the liaison to Law Enforcement as required.

This role will entail completing investigations while ensuring cases meet or exceed closure and quality metrics, reporting facts of the investigation to assist in identifying potential operational or compliance risks, and making recommendations to file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) in a timely and accurate manner for submission to regulators and/or law enforcement.

The Investigator may be asked to partner with GFC Risk Management, front line units or other stakeholders to resolve investigations. The Investigator will maintain a working knowledge of relevant anti financial crimes laws, rules, and regulations, as well as an awareness of industry best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Completes investigations while overseeing cases meet or exceed closure and quality metrics
  • Completes investigations in a timely and accurate manner for submission of SAR to regulators and/or law enforcement
  • Reports facts of the investigation to senior stakeholders, assisting in identifying potential operational or compliance risks and partners with Global Financial Crimes (GFC) Management and/or Front Line Units (FLU) to resolve investigations
  • Performs quality control functions, training, communications, guidance, monitoring scenario development/enhancement input and testing, or law enforcement liaison responsibilities in an investigative support role
  • Managing a significant case inventory while prioritizing cases based upon risk and/or management direction while adhering to department Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Perform research and analysis of transaction information, customer data, public records, social media platforms or other external research tools to aide in the investigation to determine whether the activity appears to be normal for the client type
  • Responsible for preparing concise reporting that captures the investigative details that support their decision
  • Making recommendations to file Suspicious Activity Reports in a timely and accurate manner for submission to regulators and law enforcement across mulitple jurisdictions
  • Communicating with GFC Management, front line units or other internal stakeholders, and law enforcement to obtain additional information and documentation as needed to resolve investigations
  • Recommending appropriate follow-up and possible account closure for customers that exceed the Bank's risk tolerance; and identifies and escalates potential operational or compliance risks
  • Performing quality control functions, training, communications, guidance, monitoring scenario development/enhancement input and testing, or law enforcement liaison responsibilities in an investigative support role
  • Flexible to perform other functions as requested by management
Qualifications
  • Experience with AML, Risk, or Compliance experience and/or knowledge of financial crimes typologies
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel / data analysis
  • Substantial working knowledge of Global Markets products, services, transactions, and client activities, including securities, fixed income, equities, foreign exchange, derivatives, financing, capital markets and investment banking activities, as applicable
  • Demonstrated understanding of money laundering, fraud, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion typologies, red flags, and investigative techniques relevant to Global Markets products, transactions and client activity.
  • Substantial working knowledge of Global Payments and correspondent banking products, services, transactions, and corporate and institutional client activities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of money laundering, fraud, terrorist financing and sanctions evasion typologies, red flags, and investigative techniques relevant to Global Payments and correspondent banking.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian sanctions requirements, sanctions evasion typologies, indicators, and investigative practices, including the identification and investigation of potential sanctions circumvention, beneficial ownership concealment, intermediary structures, and other sanctions-related risks
Desired Qualifications
  • Additional technical/functional experience (e.g., Industry type): Financial Services and/or related government entity
  • Certifications: ACAMS – Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists
  • Experience supporting Global Markets, Capital Markets, Sales & Trading, Corporate and Investment Banking, including Global Payments, or related businesses.
  • Experience conducting investigations involving fraud, sanctions exposure, sanctions evasion risk, cross-border activity, trade-based money laundering, complex legal entity structures, correspondent banking, securities, and capital markets transactions.
  • Knowledge of Canadian AML/AT, fraud and sanctions regulatory requirements, including FINTRAC reporting obligations and sanctions-related investigative expectations.
