Position Summary

The Community Services Department is accepting applications for the contract position of GIS Technician, Infrastructure. Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure & ROW as well as the Sr. Asset Management Advisor, this position is responsible for providing support for Asset Management, Infrastructure, Development Engineering and Planning while collaborating with GIS Services to maintain and update GIS data.

Major Job Responsibilities

GIS Data

  • Creates, maintains, and updates GIS datasets (including importing/digitizing AutoCAD drawings) and spatial asset inventories, as well as produces cartographic and analytical products
  • Collaborates with GIS Services to maintain and update divisional business-related GIS data and prepare GIS information for internal and external requests
  • Coordinating, reviewing, and updating asset information provided from various internal/external sources into Town’s data repositories
  • Collects, evaluates, maintains and coordinates the infrastructure asset information and records for the Town’s Asset Management Program
  • Performs asset register updates, including asset inventory data, condition assessment and field inspection information

Operational Management

  • Provides support for capital projects including maintenance and construction projects
  • Works with the staff at external agencies to compare and reconcile conflicts in information related to Milton infrastructure assets
  • Documents maintenance activities and repairs by the Operations department
  • Assists with fieldwork verification and/or georeferencing, that may require onsite visits
  • Preparing maps and updated data in support of capital projects

Acquisition Deployment

  • Participation in the implementation of new technologies and upgrades of existing technologies that will minimize the disruption of staff and their ability to deliver services
  • Assists with identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness of business procedures through use of features and functionality available within the implemented business applications and tools
  • Researches and develops best practices and systems monitoring to ensure progressive growth of the Town’s asset management program

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary Diploma in GIS
  • Degree in Geography or Computer Science, is preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a GIS Technician in a municipal or government agency environment
  • Four (4) years of experience as a GIS Technician or Analyst is preferred
  • Work experience with GIS databases and applications
  • Experience working with CAD software like AutoCAD or MicroStation
  • Experience with ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS mobile field applications (Collector, Survey123, and Field Maps), is preferred

Additional Skills

  • Knowledge using GIS software specifically ESRI ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
  • Must be proficient with ArcGIS software products and extensions (Spatial Analyst)
  • Knowledge of municipal GIS principles, practices and standards
  • Advanced knowledge of municipal GIS applications, concepts, geodatabases and processes
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
