Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,500 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

McElhanney Ltd. is seeking an experienced and solution-oriented GIS Analyst to join our GIS Division based in Vancouver, BC. This is a rewarding opportunity for a self-guided professional with a passion for innovation and digital transformation in geospatial technologies.

At McElhanney, our GIS team leverages advanced technologies – including drones, LiDAR, and real-time sensor networks – to capture and integrate geospatial data from land, air, and water. Using industry-leading platforms like ESRI ArcGIS Portal and FME, we transform raw spatial information into actionable insights through 3D modeling, geodatabase management, field mapping, and interactive web mapping. Our innovative approach incorporates analytics to uncover patterns, predict trends, and support data-driven decision-making for projects ranging from urban infrastructure to environmental stewardship. By collaborating closely with clients, we deliver custom GIS solutions that go beyond traditional mapping, empowering communities with dynamic, accessible, and comprehensive geospatial intelligence.

Reporting to our Vancouver-based GIS Division, this role offers the flexibility to work remotely or in a hybrid environment while supporting the team during Pacific Time Zone business hours. Candidates located within reasonable proximity to a McElhanney office are preferred to facilitate occasional in-person collaboration, team meetings, and client engagement.

What You’ll Do
  • Support and deliver advanced GIS mapping and analysis projects across multiple branches in Western Canada, leveraging your expertise in the ESRI Portal web environment to publish, deploy, and steward digital GIS solutions.
  • Architect, integrate, and optimize complex geospatial datasets using industry-leading platforms (ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, FME, and related technologies).
  • Design and implement interactive web maps, dashboards, and mobile applications that empower clients and internal teams with actionable geospatial intelligence.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop custom GIS workflows, automate data processes, integrate digital solutions and drive innovation in spatial analytics, 3D modeling, and real-time data integration.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of GIS methodologies, standards, and best practices within the organization.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand their needs, propose tailored solutions, and ensure the successful delivery of high-impact GIS projects.
  • May occasionally require field work to support data collection, ground-truthing, and project needs as required.
What You’ll Bring
  • Advanced Diploma in GIS or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in GIS analysis, solution deployment, and project deliverables.
  • Advanced proficiency with ESRI Portal (ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online) for publishing, sharing, and maintaining digital GIS solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Strong skills in geodatabase design, spatial analysis, web mapping, and best practices for publishing to Portal for ArcGIS.
  • Demonstrated expertise in automating GIS workflows and leveraging FME to streamline data integration, transformation, and analysis. Proven track record of developing innovative GIS applications and workflows for diverse sectors (e.g., infrastructure, environment, utilities).
  • Leverage foundational coding and scripting skills (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Arcade, Python/ArcPy) to enhance GIS sites and applications by integrating custom code and expressions to deliver more dynamic, user-focused solutions across the platform.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid, unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license.
