Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Field Technician for our Ottawa office in the Geotechnical and Materials Engineering department. You will conduct field and laboratory QA/QC monitoring and testing, including soils, aggregates, concrete, and paving mixtures.

Travel to sites, collect samples, and collaborate with engineers to ensure data quality and project success. The role requires 12-hour days, up to 6 days a week, and potential out-of-town assignments lasting 1–2 weeks or more.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s Licence required; access to own vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to sites and collect samples; obtain field data.
  • Inspect drill and test pit investigations.
  • Perform QA/QC monitoring and testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, mortar, and paving mixtures.
  • Input test data into lab software and review reports for accuracy.
  • Operate field testing equipment and assist with technical issue resolution on sites.
  • Coordinate with Geotechnical Engineers and Technologists on project needs.
  • Maintain calibration and accuracy of laboratory testing equipment.

Your Opportunity

We are currently looking for a Field Technician within the Geotechnical and Materials Engineering department for our Ottawa office. As a member of our team you will work closely with an impressive team of engineers and technologists, primarily performing field and laboratory QA/QC monitoring and testing services.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Travel to sites, collection of samples, obtain field data
  • Inspection of drill and test pit investigations
  • Construction QA/QC Monitoring and Testing
  • Field and laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, concrete, mortar and bituminous paving mixtures
  • Fill placement and compaction monitoring
  • Fresh and hardened concrete monitoring and testing
  • Input test data into laboratory software programs & review generated reports for accuracy
  • Operating computerized and digital testing equipment
  • Assisting in resolution of technical issues on construction sites
  • Interacting with Materials and Geotechnical Engineers routinely
  • Making sure laboratory testing equipment accuracy is maintained in good conditions and meets the calibration requirements in accordance to the manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Continuing to improve your technical abilities and certifications within the framework of laboratories areas of practice
  • Other general field and lab related duties
  • Operations: You will be expected to support team operations and play an integral part in the success of the project. Promotion of our health and safety culture, client relations, equipment and resources maintenance and management, and other related duties will be expected.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Energetic, team-oriented player with a commitment to superior client service.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to communicate effectively with technical and management personnel remotely.
  • Ability to work up to 12 hours per day, 6 days per week (weekend and overtime work will be required).
  • Available to work on out-of-town projects, typically 1 to 2 weeks but as long as 3 to 4 weeks at a time.
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • CCIL/CSA certification for concrete field and laboratory testing is required. Training will be provided in order to receive the certification.
Education and Experience
  • The ideal candidate will have a related academic background and work experience that includes:
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent is preferred.
  • Effective communications skills (computer, written, oral)
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to their own personal vehicle.

Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Some time will be spent in a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
