Job description

Geotechnical Field Laboratory Technician (2024101755)

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Field/Laboratory Technician to join our team in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections and monitoring during construction projects to ensure compliance with geotechnical specifications and standards;
  • Conduct in situ testing of various materials on construction sites, compaction testing, and testing of concrete;
  • Complete field investigations including soil logging of both drilling and test pitting operations;
  • Carry out laboratory tests within our soils and concrete laboratory;
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained in accordance with specifications;
  • Maintain an organized environment including soil inventory and equipment;
  • Collaborate with engineers and other team members to provide technical support and assistance as needed;
  • Maintain accurate records of field and laboratory testing activities;
  • Uphold strong workplace health and safety practices.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's license with acceptable driving record;
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and complete fieldwork in all weather conditions;
  • Willingness to work on a combination of field and office work in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Highly organized, and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments;
  • Comfortable with variability in day-to-day tasks.

Assets

  • Technician/technologist diploma from a recognized college;
  • Experience with laboratory soil testing procedures such as Proctor Tests and grain size analyses;
  • An understanding of ASTM and CSA Standards;
  • CCIL and CSA Certification for soils, concrete, and asphalt would be an asset.

Base Salary Range

  • $60,000 - $90,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
  • The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
  • Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
