TEEMA Solutions Group Inc.

Job Overview

14953

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING, TRANSMISSION - STATIONS

The Transmission Engineering Division offers a rewarding opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join its Geotechnical Team as a Contingent Labour Resource Augmentation. The division provides engineering services for 18,000 km of transmission lines, 150+ substations, and numerous telecom towers. Projects include capital and maintenance work on stations, lines, and telecom assets. The focus of this role will be on foundation design, ground improvement, geohazard and geotechnical risk identification and mitigation. The assessment and design of station assets across the province will be primary, with work also involving line and telecom assets. Experience with rock anchor foundation design and rock slope stabilization would be advantageous, although rock engineering and rock mechanic assessments are not mandatory.

The current geotechnical team comprises 1 specialist engineer (stations), 2 senior engineers, 1 technologist, and 2 external geotechnical engineers. The environment is multidisciplinary, requiring collaboration with Electrical, Overhead, Structural, Civil, environmental, safety, and construction management teams. Some work is conducted by external consultants, especially subsurface site investigations.

Experience and Role Accountabilities

- General

  • Develop safe engineering solutions through initiative and judgment, including design development, problem analysis, and interpretation of specifications for medium to complex BC Hydro projects.
  • Meet safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives by proposing plan modifications, preparing reports, and coordinating work schedules.
  • Resolve complex design and field engineering issues through independent studies, analysis, and recommendations to support operations and project completion.
  • Contribute to BC Hydro's engineering practice by conducting studies, developing standards, and providing guidance to engineering professionals, including acting as Owner's Engineer.
  • Deliver excellent customer service by communicating with stakeholders, defining service scope, establishing design criteria, and reporting progress.
  • Make complex technical decisions regarding design bases, criteria, and resource management to support major engineering projects.

- Specific Experience and Responsibilities

This role requires proven experience in geotechnical design for heavily loaded building foundations and substation components, suitable for voltages from 60kV to 500kV, including telecommunication towers.

  • Lead procurement of consulting and site investigation services, collaborating on scope, specs, and payment terms.
  • Review and approve proposals, reports, and specifications from consultants and contractors.
  • Prepare internal memos on risk mitigation, scope, and cost estimates for future project phases.
  • Collaborate on multidisciplinary documents and assist in constructability assessments and risk management.
  • Participate in design reviews, conduct field reviews, and oversee construction monitoring.
  • Assist in contract management and invoicing processes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited Canadian university.
  • 12+ years of experience, classified as E5 per EGBC guidelines.
  • Professional Engineer license from EGBC, with ability to apply digital seal technology.
  • EGBC Permit to Practice number and valid BC driver's license.
  • Professional Liability Insurance.
  • Proficiency in English, CAD, industry software, and MS Office.

Specific Areas of Expertise

The candidate should be proficient in some of the following areas, either acting as POR (signing and sealing) or reviewing work by others:

  • Site investigation planning and execution
  • Settlement and preload design
  • Foundation design, including pile analysis and seismic considerations
  • Slope stability analysis
  • Soil characterization and backfill assessment
  • Risk assessment and mitigation for issues like liquefaction, ground improvement, and geohazards

The candidate should also be capable of reviewing seismic ground response analyses, foundation stability post-earthquake, and construction monitoring of ground improvement works.

This is an initial one-year contract, with high likelihood of extension based on workload and performance. Attendance at BC Hydro workplaces may be required, subject to vaccination policies.
