The Opportunity

McElhanney offers opportunities for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to enhance our technical depth and build our team across our Industrial & Materials division in Kamloops, BC.

We are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer / Project Manager with a proven track record in planning, managing, and delivering engineering work packages, with a focus on industrial and mining projects. In this role, you will lead diverse geotechnical projects, manage client relationships, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver solutions that meet client expectations.

As a Geotechnical Engineer / Project Manager, you will oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of geotechnical projects, ensuring compliance with CFEM, client standards, and industry best practices. You will conduct geotechnical investigations and analyses, prepare and review technical reports and designs, and provide recommendations on ground stability, earthworks, and foundations for various projects. Additionally, you will manage project budgets, schedules, and scopes, maintain strong client relationships, identify opportunities for business growth, and contribute to proposal development. The ideal candidate will be motivated to foster client relationships, identify and pursue new business opportunities, and mentor a team of engineers and technicians to develop a high-performing and collaborative group.

You will have 5-10 years of professional experience and be a strong team player with high productivity and excellent attention to detail. You will also have the opportunity to leverage your established contacts and local experience to further build out our geotechnical services.

The successful candidate may be based in Kamloops, BC, and can work in an office, or a hybrid of remote and office work. We also offer relocation assistance for non-local candidates.

What You’ll Be Doing
As a Technical Expert:
  • Manage geotechnical investigations and assessments, including interpretation and documentation of results, on various transportation, municipal, land development, and resource projects.
  • Provide geotechnical analysis of stability, stress, deformation, and foundation responses using software platforms.
  • Provide oversight, risk management, and technical inputs to geotechnical projects and deliverables.
  • Coordinate field projects, including prequalification, safety clearances, and procurement of subcontractors and sub-consultants.
  • Prepare concise geotechnical reports with recommendations.
  • Supervise field inspections of construction works.
  • Prepare fee estimates and proposals for geotechnical assignments.
  • Support other divisions within McElhanney with geotechnical input.
As a Project Manager:
  • Communicate effectively, working from the office, home, or remotely via virtual meetings.
  • Participate in business development and client management to grow the business.
  • Lead projects independently, overseeing schedules, technical deliverables, and budgets.
  • Mentor junior technical staff.
  • Support the growth of technical expertise within the team.
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Geotechnical/Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering with a geotechnical focus.
  • At least five years of relevant geotechnical experience, including analysis, design, and consulting.
  • Knowledge of seismic engineering, retaining wall designs, slope stability, settlement analysis, and foundation designs.
  • Experience with geotechnical software such as Bently OpenGround, Settle3, Plaxis, FLAC, GeoStudio, Lpile, or Allpile.
  • Registration as a P.Eng. in British Columbia or eligibility to register.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams, including remote work environments.

Compensation and Commitment

Pay Range: $91,000 - $135,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
