Job description

Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Geotechnical Engineer. The successful candidate will work closely with our Vertex offices throughout Canada and will be responsible for the technical execution of geotechnical engineering projects within Canada.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • 10 or more years of professional work experience in the field of geotechnical engineering.
  • A licensed member of Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Knowledge and working experience with applicable regulations, codes, and guidelines such as CFEM, CHBDC, OPSS, OBC, etc.
  • Experience in the use of commercially available software packages for the assessment of slope stability is required.
  • Experience in Geotechnical design and preparing investigation reports
  • Experience with project management.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Microsoft products is required.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario driver’s license is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide technical support for pipeline and linear infrastructure projects related to new construction, mitigations, and monitoring. Projects could include, but are not limited to, assessments related to roads, pipelines, powerlines, telecommunication towers, foundation assessment and design, oilsands operations, residential and commercial developments, constructed ponds, developments in muskeg, linear development crossing assessments including HDD and trenchless crossings.
  • Provide technical support in projects related to pipeline integrity focused on geohazards. Able to interpret and utilize aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and LiDAR data for assessment of geohazards.
  • Conduct engineering assessments for slope instability. Have familiarity with the concepts of landslide susceptibility, risk assessments, soil characteristics, and factor of safety.
  • Create recommendations for geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring of geohazards.
  • Coordinate with drillers and geotechnical labs.
  • Mentor junior engineers to support geotechnical field activities.
  • Travel for conducting site investigations in field when required.
  • Review and assess lab results.
  • Technical report writing.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project success.
  • Prepare proposals and cost estimates.
  • Work with leadership team to develop new client base and growth of the business.
  • Other duties as required.

LOCATION

  • This position will be based out of Southwestern Ontario. A hybrid work schedule is available with this role.
