Geological Technologist, Geoscience Support- Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), is recruiting for a Geological Technologist, Geoscience Support position. This role requires a strong understanding of various surface and subsurface geology data types, their applications across various software packages and platforms, and the ability to manage large volumes of data from multiple sources. Key responsibilities include collecting, maintaining, and distributing geospatial data from a wide range of geoscience databases and platforms to support technical experts in delivering products and operational activities.

This role is responsible for implementing data management strategies for geoscience data, including quality control and assurance processes, to ensure that project data remains current, and that both surface and subsurface data are managed consistently. An advanced understanding of both surface and subsurface data types is required, as this position includes organizing, loading, and managing geological data within Petrel or similar platforms, ensuring the accurate integration of data into projects.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Support multidisciplinary teams to ensure the seamless integration of geoscience data into technical workflows, methodologies, regional and provincial scale studies and models, and operational decision-making activities.

  • Organize, load, and manage geological data within Petrel (and similar platforms), ensuring accurate integration of surface and subsurface information into projects.

  • Compile, integrate, and manage a variety of surface and subsurface data (including but not limited to culture data, well headers and trajectories, wireline log LAS files, log aliases, stratigraphic tops, core data, geochemistry data, assays, geophysical surveys, GIS datasets, etc.) to support project work.

  • Provide technical leadership, oversight, and management of IHS Kingdom geotechnical data holdings, ensuring effective management, integration, and alignment with branch and organizational objectives.

  • Ensure data is stored, described, and maintained according to best-practice standards to support future use and project continuity. Serve as a data steward by verifying that datasets are incorporated into data holdings, applying formatting and structural standards, and conducting quality assurance to assess data integrity and reliability.

  • Collect and analyze information from relational databases, GIS datasets, and other geospatial sources to generate maps, cross-sections, and other products to support operational activities.

  • Mentor and train team members on geotechnical data standards, software tools, and best-practices in data stewardship.

  • Periodic support to subject matter experts at the Mineral Core Research Facility (MCRF) in Edmonton and the Core Research Centre (CRC) in Calgary.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Diploma in geoscience or geoscience related discipline from an accredited polytechnical institute, college, or university.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the petroleum industry.

  • Experience in managing extensive geoscience datasets and geospatial databases, coupled with exceptional skills in data quality assurance and control.

  • Familiarity with a wide variety of surface, subsurface, and geophysical survey data related to hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon resources in Alberta.

  • Advanced proficiency in Schlumberger Petrel and Studio, Accumap, and Kingdom database management experience is required. Familiarity with Geolog, Techlog, and ESRI ArcGIS products is an asset.

  • Practical experience with programming languages (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, etc.) and relevant libraries (e.g. Pandas, GeoPandas, etc.).

  • Association of Science & Engineering Technology (ASET) certification would be an asset.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple initiatives concurrently and adapt to shifting priorities and timelines with limited supervision is required.

  • Demonstration of strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage complex data workflows, coordinate across multidisciplinary teams, and convey technical information clearly to diverse technical audiences is required.
