The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) provides the residents of the Northwest Territories with access to quality programs, services and support to assist them in making informed and productive choices for themselves and their families with regard to education, training, careers, employment and labour, child development, languages, culture and heritage.

Job Information

We're looking for a Geographic Information Systems Officer (GIS) to join our Culture and Heritage team in Yellowknife. As the GIS Officer, you will be required to use GIS and database management systems to manage the NWT Archaeological Sites Database, which is the authoritative database of all recorded archaeological sites in the NWT (approximately 7,000 records).

This position is required to create effective geospatial methods for addressing cultural resource management issues in the NWT. You will report to the Territorial Archaeologist within the Cultural Places Program (CPP) in the Culture and Heritage Division of the Department of Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE).

Key Responsibilities:
- Maintains the NWT Archaeological Sites Database by creating and editing data records and upholding data integrity standards to ensure that high quality data is available to decision makers.
- Shares data from the NWT Archaeological Sites Database with archaeologists, Indigenous governments and organizations, industry, and other stakeholders to facilitate the protection of archaeological sites.
- Maintains geospatial archaeological survey data to ensure that it is available for land use review processes.
- Applies GIS expertise to assist CPP staff with cultural resource management challenges.
- Supports the GIS capabilities of the CPP.

To be successful in this role, typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
A degree in archaeology, geography or a related discipline with an emphasis in GIS and two (2) years of related GIS experience.
