The Afternoon Shift (2nd Shift) General Supervisor is responsible for managing teams of multi-discipline trade workers. They oversee work assignments based on the Day Shift Turnover notes and ensure all work complies with shipyard safety, quality, and environmental standards, policies, and procedures. The supervisor conducts regular performance checks and manages performance tasks, including disciplining trades employees, approving time entries, leave requests, and ensuring collective agreement compliance.
Note : This position is fully on-site at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria, due to business needs.
What you'll do
- Ensure work progresses according to safety, cost, quality, and schedule parameters.
- Implement and enforce Seaspan's health, safety, environmental, and quality processes, striving to eliminate hazards.
- Escalate trade issues to management and support the implementation of solutions.
- Support the Production Delivery team by ensuring the trade workforce is qualified and experienced.
- Provide feedback to Trade Superintendents/Supervisors on workforce performance.
- Partner with Trade Superintendents/Supervisors to ensure trades have necessary skills, equipment, training, and certifications.
- Minimize waste, delays, and expenses in work activities.
- Work with management to eliminate inefficient practices and utilize workforce skills effectively.
- Allocate trades employees based on schedule and skillset.
- Handle discipline, performance, attendance, and employment termination, including chargehand responsibilities.
- Follow and enforce collective agreements and management practices.
- Manage timekeeping and approve reports.
- Ensure a respectful, harassment-free work environment.
- Collaborate with Wellness and Abilities Management as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll bring
- Trade certification preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of ship repair experience or 2 years with advanced education in ship repair.
- Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
- Proficient knowledge of trades related to heavy manufacturing (welding, metal fabrication, electrical, pipefitting, painting/sandblasting, mechanical, rigging).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with MS Office and web applications.
- Excellent management and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate others.
- Valuing diversity within teams.
- Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
- Experience with behavioral-based safety.
- Ability to make mature, timely decisions on-site.
