Job summary

RailWorks is seeking a Superintendent to oversee railway track construction and maintenance projects in Abbotsford, BC. You will coordinate crews, materials and equipment, supervise subcontractors, and ensure work meets design specs while staying on schedule and within budget.

Reporting to the Project Director, you will review drawings, manage budgets, monitor quality, and liaise with owners, inspectors and suppliers. Travel to sites is required and night/weekend work may be needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years of related construction experience, with railway exposure preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of construction industry practices and contract management.
  • Ability to read drawings and specifications.
  • First Aid, WHMIS, valid driver’s license.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites and work night/weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate labour, equipment, and materials to support track construction and maintenance.
  • Supervise field work to ensure design, budget and schedule compliance.
  • Monitor quality and subcontractor performance.
  • Review drawings, designs, and contract documents for details.
  • Manage budgets and track production quantities weekly.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, and deliveries.
  • Ensure safety programs and company policies are followed.
  • Prepare reports for management on project status.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Project Director or designate, the Superintendent oversees and manages all phases of railway track construction and maintenance projects including coordinating workers, materials and equipment, supervising sub-contractors, ensuring that specifications are being followed, and that work is completed safely, on schedule and within budget.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Ensures adequate resources are in place including scheduling labour, equipment, materials.
  • Performs in-depth review of drawings, designs and contract documentation to become familiar with all details, notes and requirements.
  • Supervises total construction and maintenance effort in the field to ensure work is in accordance with design, budget and schedule.
  • Monitors quality standards of all work, including sub-contractor performance.
  • Assigns work to the various crews.
  • Responsible for productivity of workers and efficient use of materials and equipment
  • Reports production quantities to the office and reviews labour productivity reports on a weekly basis.
  • Monitors and adheres to established budgets for the job.
  • Investigates alternative work methods and materials which will either improve efficiency and/or the quality of work performed.
  • Monitors job schedules and coordinates sub-contractors’ work and suppliers’ deliveries and equipment needs, taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Ensures all field personnel comply with Company policies, project procedures, safety program and work rules, taking corrective action as necessary.
  • The Superintendent will be on-site as well as in the office
  • Other duties as required
  • Reviews and approves timesheets for accuracy, job coding, equipment, material, etc.
  • Participates in invoicing, identifies and administers extra to be invoiced. Gets involved with outstanding A/R’s when required.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Acts as a liaison among owners, inspectors, staff and subcontractors.
  • Assists with the preparation of written reports and/or updates for management, client, and project team, to ensure a clear understanding of project status.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • High School graduation plus post-secondary training in a related fieldor equivalent education, training and experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years recent related construction experience including a thorough knowledge of construction industry practices, methods and process. Prior railway experience is preferred by not required.
  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of basic project controls, material management, contract management, subcontract management.
  • Track record of successfully executing projects on schedule and within budget.
  • Current First Aid, WHMIS.
  • Valid and clean Driver’s License.
  • Strong management skills and ability to motivate employees.
  • Effective organizational, communication and client relations skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to pass background checks including pre-employment drug screening.
  • Availability to work nights/weekends as needed.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Travel to job sites is required.
  • Exposure to outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.
  • Work is in and around live track (trains).
  • Work may be in urban, rural or isolated areas.
