The media industry is currently going through a period of profound transformation, characterized by constant pressure to innovate and adapt. In this rapidly evolving landscape, where news and information serve as a cornerstone for a public broadcaster like CBC / Radio-Canada, the emergence and accelerated adoption of new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), present both distinct challenges and exciting opportunities.

Mission

We’re looking for a General Manager, News & Current Affairs, who is committed to fostering a culture of change management. This will ensure our news production aligns with the accelerated transformation of media, ultimately providing every citizen and audience member with the information they need to understand the world, make informed decisions and exercise their democratic rights.

Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Radio-Canada, you’ll lead the country’s largest French-language newsroom. You’ll champion quality and provide professional leadership to all the teams working there. You’ll be responsible for all content produced and broadcast by the newsroom, including the Centre de l’information (CDI) and Radio-Canada’s current affairs programs, across our digital, radio and television platforms.

You’ll oversee all newsroom activities and staff, which includes establishing and enforcing specific procedures and methods for the news department. You will manage the human, financial, and material resources of your sector, the budgets of your department, and contribute to the development of the Corporation.

Additionally, you’ll ensure compliance with our Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP) and Code of Conduct, both within the news department and at regional stations across the country. Under all circumstances, you must promote and maintain a work culture based on respect, collaboration, development, and transformation into a stimulating, friendly, and productive work environment within the newsroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion and implement Radio-Canada’s vision for digital transformation.
  • Develop a clear editorial policy focused on enabling the audience to stay informed about current events and to grasp the scope and complexity of regional, national and international issues through context and analysis.
  • Establish multiplatform programming that provides context and highlights the breadth and diversity of regional, national and international issues.
  • Collaborate closely with the French Services regional news network and English Services on national and current affairs coverage.
  • Make final editorial decisions on whether to publish, broadcast or digitally distribute articles and news pieces, as well as whether to make or recommend changes to their content, style and structure as needed.
  • Provide decisive leadership during emergency situations, whether they involve news events or challenges affecting Radio-Canada or its staff.
  • Oversee and implement the supervision of assigned editors, reporter / editors and any other employee when revisions are necessary.
  • Ensure the integrity and excellence of your assigned teams in the practice of journalism and public service.
  • Establish quality criteria for news programs.
  • Ensure the maintenance of journalistic standards throughout the Radio-Canada network and promote these standards within the Canadian French-language journalistic community.
  • Uphold the values of integrity and public service championed by Radio-Canada.
  • Develop an internal and external communications plan built on transparency and public engagement.

Qualifications And Skills

  • Undergraduate university degree in journalism, political science or equivalent; graduate studies an asset.
  • A distinguished track record and strong standing within the journalism community.
  • Fifteen to 20 years’ experience in general news reporting, including at least seven in a management role.
  • Foreign reporting experience an asset.
  • Proficiency in both French and English, spoken and written.
  • Proven skills in planning, prioritization and execution; familiarity with project management.
  • Strong digital expertise and knowledge of potential developments in news and current affairs.
