Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority, patient safety is a priority and a shared responsibility at PHSA. The role involves providing nursing care to patients admitted to Fir Square, including ante/postpartum women with issues such as drug/alcohol use, poverty, self-esteem, mental health problems, and newborns exposed to drugs/alcohol in utero, requiring observation or awaiting placement.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Using the nursing process and RNABC standards, provides care including maternal, fetal/newborn/infant assessment and administration of therapies. Creates a therapeutic environment through teaching and counseling.
- Conducts comprehensive assessments of patients, monitoring and documenting physical/emotional conditions, especially during detoxification and stabilization. Observes infants for withdrawal signs or deviations.
- Provides care and support to chemically dependent women, mother/infant dyads, substance-exposed babies, and infants requiring observation or awaiting placement.
- Plans and coordinates in-hospital services by referring to dietary, physiotherapy, social work, counseling, child life, and lactation services.
- Develops care plans with the multidisciplinary team, focusing on addiction, biopsychosocial challenges, and discharge planning. Evaluates and modifies plans as needed.
- Provides education to patients and families about pregnancy, birth, postpartum, newborn care, and parenting. Counsels on reducing risk behaviors related to NAS or FAS.
- Prepares women and families for discharge, referring to community services and liaising with relevant agencies for discharge planning.
- Initiates emergency care in crisis situations, transferring patients as per protocol and obtaining assistance from relevant resources.
- Supports a learning environment by preceptoring new staff and students and supporting research activities.
- Engages in personal and professional development through attending educational sessions and meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current registration with BCCNP.
- At least two years of recent perinatal and nursery nursing experience, including one year dealing with patients with addictions, or equivalent.
- Current CPR and Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
- Breastfeeding update (minimum 6 hours) within the last two years.
- Fetal Health Assessment Certification.
