Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority, patient safety is a priority and a shared responsibility at PHSA. The role involves continuously improving quality and safety in all aspects. Provides nursing care to patients admitted to Fir Square, including ante/postpartum women with issues such as drug/alcohol use, poverty, self-esteem, and mental health problems, as well as newborns exposed to substances in utero, requiring observation, or awaiting placement.
Duties/Accountabilities:
- Using the nursing process and RNABC standards, provides care such as maternal, fetal/newborn/infant assessment, and administration of drugs and therapies. Creates a therapeutic environment through teaching and counseling.
- Conducts comprehensive nursing assessments of assigned patients, including antepartum and postpartum women and newborns.
- Closely monitors and documents physical/emotional conditions during detoxification and stabilization.
- Monitors infants for withdrawal signs or deviations from the norm.
- Provides care and support to:
- Chemically dependent women.
- Mother/infant dyads postpartum, with bedside infant care when possible.
- Substance-exposed infants in the nursery.
- Infants needing additional observation due to medical instability.
- Infants awaiting placement.
- Plans and coordinates hospital services, referring to dietary, physiotherapy, social work, counseling, child life, and lactation services.
- Develops comprehensive care plans with the multidisciplinary team, focusing on addiction, biopsychosocial/spiritual challenges, and discharge planning. Evaluates and modifies plans as needed.
- Provides education to patients and families on pregnancy, birth, postpartum, newborn care, and parenting. Counsels on reducing risks associated with NAS and FAS.
- Prepares women and families for discharge, referring to community services and liaising with relevant agencies for discharge planning.
- Initiates emergency care for women/fetus/newborn in crisis, transferring to appropriate units per protocol and obtaining assistance from relevant resources.
- Contributes to a learning environment by preceptoring new staff and students, and supporting research in this specialty.
- Engages in personal and professional development through attending in-services, rounds, conferences, and meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current registration as an RN with BCCNP.
- Two years recent perinatal and nursery nursing experience, including one year working with patients with addictions, or equivalent.
- Current CPR and Newborn Resuscitation Certification.
- Breastfeeding update (minimum 6 hours) in the last two years.
- Fetal Health Assessment Certification.
