In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Under the general supervision of the Care Coordinator or the Patient Care Manager, the nurse assesses, plans, provides, and evaluates nursing care for assigned patients in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
  • Basic Life Support, Level C required.
  • Recognized post-basic education for clinical areas or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year's recent related experience.

Specialty unit nurse positions also require area-specific specialty certification for the unit. Emergency Room, ICU, and Critical Care Relief Pool positions require Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Critical care and specialty units (e.g., Emergency, ICU, O.R., P.A.R., Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Psychiatry) require two years of recent related experience.

  • Ability to apply the nursing process effectively in a well-organized manner to the care of assigned patients.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and act appropriately in stressful and emergency situations.
