Job Summary

A Brief Overview

Reporting to the Manager, General Accounting, the General Accounting Officer ensures accurate recording of the University's financial transactions with a focus on PCI compliance, Accounts Receivable (including student collections), and GST/HST tax reporting. This role provides expertise in financial stewardship, overseeing credit card merchant accounts, managing overdue receivables, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

The incumbent performs financial transaction processing, account management, and leads project initiatives to improve financial operations. Handling sensitive and confidential information with discretion is essential. Committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenization, the Officer builds strong stakeholder relationships.

This position administers complex financial responsibilities in support of the department's operating, capital, ancillary, endowment, and joint venture funds. This position oversees the overall integrity of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting processes, personnel cost reconciliations and forecasts, capital project financial oversight and financial statement preparation. This position directs, allocates and supervises the work of other staff.

What you will do

  • Oversees, creates, and generates appropriate and relevant financial management reports and analyses through the preparation of financial statements, reports, income tax returns and statutory filings.
  • Confirms expenses are valid and accurate, prepares journal entries, and obtains documentation.
  • Prepares monthly financial forecasts and financial information packages for each budget.
  • Oversees audits and monitors visits conducted by internal and external audit agencies.
  • Prepares all working papers and supporting documents to assist the audits.
  • Develops and maintains internal controls and financial processes.
  • Prepares monthly spending and forecast analyses on projects, and ensures that projects are staying within approved budget.
  • Monitors and quantifies effective processes and procedures to minimize departmental financial liability, exposure, and risk.
  • Participates in medium and long-term strategic planning for department.
  • Directs, allocates, and supervises the work of other staff.
  • Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

Required Education

  • Four-Year Bachelor Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.

Required Experience

  • More than 5 years of experience.

Required Licenses And Certifications

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant designation is required.

Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work processes.
  • Anticipate complex challenges to ensure activities are completed on time.
  • Effectively leverage relevant data as input to making decisions.
  • Appropriately assess risks before making a decision.
  • Comprehensive understanding of what sexual violence, harassment and discrimination are, and their varying effects on diverse members of the community.
  • Question and take appropriate steps to address attitudes, macroaggressions and other behaviours which are discriminatory. Acknowledges and respects diverse cultural traditions, abilities and beliefs.
  • Assess the suitability of job candidates and recommend the most appropriate person for hire.
  • Evaluate employee performance and decide on appropriate training, coaching and development plans to assist employees in reaching career goals.
