Job description

This position is responsible for installing and servicing equipment and tanks based on certifications and tickets. G1 equipment above 400,000 BTUs, G2 equipment up to and including 400,000 BTUs, and G3 working with a G1 or G2. The Service Technician responds to requests based on their certifications for the most difficult and unusual repair situations, serving as the technical and code expert for the service team.

The Service Technician is accountable for upholding high safety standards in the handling of propane, conducting vehicle inspections and maintenance, and collaborating with a Service Coordinator for scheduling and feedback. The role may include supervising G2 or G1 Service Technicians or apprentices until they achieve certification.

This role works closely with the Service & Bulk Coordination Supervisor and Service Coordinator.

Key responsibilities include applying advanced technical knowledge in installing and servicing residential and commercial propane equipment, including repairs, dispenser inspections, cylinder re-qualifications, tank installation, and preventative maintenance.

Safe operation of crane trucks and other service vehicles for tank work is required, along with maintaining inventory and ensuring parts and supplies are available.

Collect customer signatures and payments as needed, utilizing OBTC technology. Apply lockout procedures in unsafe installations.

Maintain safety standards and compliance with regulations, including vehicle and site inspections and visual tank inspections.

Coordinate with the Service Coordinator on routing, scheduling, and safety issues. Notify supervisors of any challenges or successes, and obtain necessary approvals for overtime, submitting hours bi-weekly.

Provide excellent customer service, promote company products and services, and identify sales opportunities.

If certified as G1 or G2, provide training and guidance to G3 Service Technicians.

Qualifications

  • Secondary school diploma required.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience.
  • Provincial gas fitter certificates and training records required.
  • HVAC certification preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of propane appliances, equipment, and plant operations.
  • Excellent knowledge of B149 code.
  • WHMIS and TDG certifications required.
  • Valid driver’s license with three years’ experience and a clean abstract.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug, alcohol, and physical tests.
  • Physically capable of lifting heavy objects regularly.
  • Proficiency with computers, especially onboard truck computers.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Full training provided for company-specific gas fitting tasks.

Compensation varies based on certification:

  • G1 with rail, mining, and LP tickets: $40-45/hr
  • G2 with LP tickets: $32-36/hr
  • G3: $26-28/hr

Position is full-time, with options for part-time. Work is Monday to Friday, 8 hours daily, with potential overtime during busy seasons. Benefits include paid vacation, group insurance after three months, and RRSP after one year.
