Job description

The Centre for Immigrant and Community Services is seeking a Garden Program Assistant - Youth (aged 18-30) to assist with community greenhouse and garden operations and maintenance.

Summary: Garden work – Youth Garden Club (18 – 30 years old) - Assisting CICS Community greenhouse and garden operations and maintenance.

Description: As a Garden Program Assistant, you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with planting, transplanting, and maintaining plants in the greenhouse and garden. Water, fertilize, and monitor plant health, reporting any issues like pests or diseases. Weed, mulch, and maintain garden beds to ensure a healthy growing environment;
  • Help with harvesting, sorting, and packaging produce as needed. Maintain cleanliness and organization in the greenhouse, tool storage areas, and workspaces;
  • Participate in composting and other sustainable gardening practices;
  • Assist with setting up garden trellises and irrigation systems, and monitoring soil conditions;
  • Support educational workshops or community events (e.g. interpreter) to gardening and sustainability (if interested).

Requirements: Passion for plants, gardening, and sustainable farming. Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending, kneeling, lifting moderate weights (15lbs), and standing for extended periods; Basic knowledge of plant care and gardening (preferred but not required); Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team; Commitment to a minimum of 1 shift (1.5 hours) per week (flexible scheduling available); Respect for CICS garden and greenhouse policies, safety guidelines, and environmental sustainability practices.
