Our Organization

The National Diabetes Trust is Canada’s largest charitable clothing and small household good collection service. With more than 5,000 donations bins and an active home pick-up service in communities across Canada (excluding Quebec), we collect unwanted gently used clothing and household items, using them to raise much-needed funds for Diabetes Canada.

Each year, the program diverts more than 100 million pounds of clothing and household items from landfill sites across Canada. As an employee on the National Diabetes Trust team, you are part of our national coverage in 2,500 communities, with 28 operations and 100 trucks. This role will work up to 29 hours per week. A consistent schedule will be developed in collaboration with operational needs.

About The Charitable Donations Pickup Driver Role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this critical role will work up to 29 hours per week, driving established routes to collect donated clothing and household items from our valued customers’ homes and our designated charity donations bins – and deliver these items to our Corporate Partners and storage facilities.

Highlights Of The Role Include

  • To understand and promote the mission of the National Diabetes Trust to the general public and to all volunteers
  • Has a thorough knowledge of the organization goals and objectives, services, programs, and organizational structure at all levels
  • Always operate vehicles in compliance with applicable laws and regulations and in a safe and responsible manner
  • Conduct ‘pre’ and ‘post’ trip inspections
  • Complete and submit the appropriate paperwork daily
  • Complete the Hours-of-Service Logs and associated paperwork and submit daily
  • Always carry, proof of valid driver’s license, valid plate permit registration, a copy of the Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration/National Safety Code Registration documentation and the associated vehicle inspection and Hours of Service documentation
  • Check in with dispatch at beginning, mid-day, and end of scheduled route
  • Provide an appropriate message card to each donor
  • Complete and properly log all assigned pick ups
  • Unload merchandise as instructed
  • Return all equipment to the office at the end of each day
  • Report route discrepancies with the dispatch
  • Ensure that only authorized personnel ride inside the truck
  • Participate in all required driving related NDT education, initiatives, directives, and procedures
  • Additional duties as required ensuring the effective function of Operations

About You

  • Grade 12 Education or equivalent experience
  • Ability to read maps
  • Ability to handle 10-50 lbs. loads
  • Ability to drive a 3-Ton (16 foot) straight truck
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to map routes for efficient pickup
  • Ability to project a positive business-like image to the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Ability to provide calm assistance to upset clients
  • Ability to maintain public relations type attitude even during stressful situations
  • Ability to understand and follow written or verbal instructions
  • Good command of the English language
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Must have Class 5 and / or G license, passenger car or light truck
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years actual driving experience at the above level. 2 years if the driver has received professional commercial vehicle training
  • Must have a clean driver abstract, less than 21 days old, with no violations or accidents within the last 3 years
