Overview

Position Description :

As a Teaching and Laboratory Assistant in Future Science Leaders (FSL), you will perform duties to support both classroom and laboratory learning in the Year 1 program, as well as help to create an engaging and positive learning space. Working as a member of a larger team which includes the Program Manager, Experiential Learning Specialist, and Program Facilitators, you must both be able to collaborate as well as take initiative.

This position requires an approachable, organized, and self-motivated individual who can observe needs and step in to assist. No previous experience is necessary as a teaching or laboratory assistant. You should also have a strong interest in STEM learning. This position requires an enthusiastic, efficient, independent, and creative individual with a passion for mentoring enthusiastic high school students. The FSL Teaching Assistant must be comfortable working with high school students (Grades 10-11, class size 20-25) in STEAM at a university level. Flexibility and confidence are required to work in this highly collaborative team.

The position is from September to the end of May, working 12 hours a week, with a three-week winter break, and a two-week break in mid-March. You will provide in-session support during the Year 1 program on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend the Discover (Year 1) program sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00pm-9:00pm, with a total of 12 hours each week. Note that two sessions run consecutively from 4:00pm-6:00pm and 6:30pm-8:30pm on both Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator; are responsible for attendance, welcoming students into the building, helping facilitate classroom activities such as distributing supplies, offering guidance and mentorship to students, as well as documenting sessions through photography.
  • Work with the Experiential Learning Specialist and Facilitator to prepare materials for laboratory activities, clean and maintain an orderly work environment, and model correct procedures to students when appropriate.
  • Assist in the recruitment of students for the following program year for all programs by reviewing applications and attending interviews.
  • Support other FSL programs when needed, including chaperoning field trips and supporting FSL events (Winter Science Nights, Spring Student Showcase).
  • May lead at least one lesson within the program as agreed upon with the experiential learning specialist.
  • Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World.
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role.

  • An undergraduate degree in a STEAM field (completed or ongoing) is an asset

  • Being an FSL student alumni is an asset
Important Availability
  • Can travel to Science World for work on Tuesdays (3:00pm-9:00pm) and Thursdays (3:00pm-9:00pm) from September to May

This is a unionized position represented by CUPE 1004. The compensation rate is $20.66 / hour.

After successfully completing probation, will be eligible to join the Voluntary RRSP / TFSA Plan and receive paid time off (sick, wellness days).
