FURNITURE FINISHING ASSISTANT

SUMMARY

The Furniture Finishing Assistant provides support to the Furniture Finishers (Top Coaters) by preparing surfaces, applying finishes, and assisting with various tasks to ensure the final product meets quality standards. This role often involves using hand and power tools, handling materials, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.

Extensive on-the-job training is required to become proficient in all product models.

This position is best suited to a dedicated team player who takes pride in providing quality work. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1 . Sanding / Maintenance

  • Prepares products for staining or painting by sanding and inspecting them.
  • Sand all products and pieces as per the daily schedule, using an orbital sander.
  • Installs additional pieces using a pneumatic driver to products that aren’t installed in the assembly area, as per product design.
  • Performs maintenance of sanding equipment and table.
  • Changes filters monthly; blows the filters clean every week or as needed.
  • Helps finishing area wherever needed, mainly doing housekeeping duties, helps with inventory, and may help with scuffing.
  • Contributes as a reliable and effective team member within and across teams.

2 . Performs all tasks in keeping with Keilhauer’s safety and quality standards.

  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
  • Safely operates tools and equipment; cleans and cares for spray guns and keeps work areas clean and orderly; informs Production Supervisor of issues.
  • Follows all company and OSHA Safety regulations; works safely and uses personal protective equipment as instructed; reinforces housekeeping and Keilhauer’s core values.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 6 months’ working experience in a wood finishing environment is an asset.
  • Completion of high school or training / education from a vocational / trade school.
  • Experience working with pneumatic / power tools (ie, sanders, drivers, spray guns).
  • Knowledge of different types of wood and finishing techniques.
  • ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Communication : Must be able to read and write in English; must be able to speak English or communicate in American Sign Language (ASL); must work well with others and communicate effectively.
  • Mobility : Must be able to stand for prolonged periods on a cement floor; frequently required to move around a large manufacturing facility; may be required to perform work functions at either Keilhauer location; frequent reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping required.
  • Manual Dexterity & Coordination : Must have the strength, dexterity and coordination to frequently lift products to the workstation (up to 50 lbs.) use hands, wrists and fingers to grip, pull and manipulate various production pieces; grip and use hand tools and paint brushes; must be able to operate the spray gun.
  • Vision : Must have good visual acuity to inspect and evaluate the quality of products, select the correct components, and read the daily schedule; specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision, and the ability to focus.
  • Cognitive Ability : Must have the ability to read and interpret work guidelines, safety instructions, and operating manuals; must possess general knowledge of hand and air tools; must have the ability to learn new skills; must use common sense and be able to carry out written and / or oral instructions.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employees spend 100% of their time in the production area, where they are frequently exposed to airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

  • Must be capable of multi-tasking and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • You must be able to wear personal protective equipment, as required (ex. ear earplugs, dust masks).
  • Must maintain a sense of urgency under tight deadlines.
  • May be required to work at either Keilhauer location or help with other functional areas as the need arises.
  • Must be willing to participate in training relevant to the position or industry.
  • May occasionally be required to work overtime to meet business needs.
  • Follows all company and OSHA Safety regulations; works safely, reinforces housekeeping, and Keilhauer’s core values.
