The Union Cooperative Initiative (UCI) is a non-profit solidarity cooperative building an economy that works for all. We lead the development, incubation, and operation of union cooperatives that are good for people and the planet.
Launched in 2021 by a coalition of labour unions and cooperatives including the BC Federation of Labour, BC Cooperative Association, and Vancity Savings Credit Union, the UCI has grown to a network of 12 active cooperatives that have provided support and living wage work opportunities to over 130 precarious gig workers.
SaveOurLocalNews.ca is a regional advocacy campaign dedicated to protecting and promoting strong, independent local journalism. As media outlets face closures and consolidation, this campaign seeks to mobilize public support, influence policy, and generate resources to ensure that local news remains a pillar of Canadian democracy. The journalist-led campaign is developing community-led cooperatives to begin publishing local news again.
We are seeking a motivated and organized Fundraising Coordinator to lead and manage fundraising efforts for the SaveOurLocalNews.ca campaign. The ideal candidate will be passionate about local journalism, experienced in donor engagement, and capable of executing grassroots and institutional fundraising strategies.

The UCI is a living wage cooperative building an economy that works for people and the planet. Our minimum rates are tied to the living wage rate for regions across British Columbia. We implement an equal wage for equal work policy. All workers make a living wage base rate of $27.05 an hour where project rates are standardized and based on the level of work and responsibility of the role.
The UCI network operates as a freelancer collective or ecosystem. Workers in the UCI are involved with autonomous network cooperatives and have the ability to collaborate on projects together. Freelance workers support the development of our community-focused and worker-run cooperatives through paid work opportunities, volunteer opportunities, and sweat equity programs.
There is no requirement for workers to participate in volunteer or sweat equity programs and we prioritize paid work opportunities for qualified precarious workers.
