Job summary

Algonquin College is seeking an experienced educator for a full-time academic role in the Allied Health department. The position involves designing and updating courses, delivering instruction across terms, and mentoring students through tutoring and academic advising.

Applicants should have an RRT with the Ontario College of Respiratory Therapists, a Health Sciences degree, and proven experience in teaching and curriculum development, including hybrid/online formats.

Qualifications

• Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario as an RRT.
• Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences or related field.
• Minimum two years of teaching experience, preferably in a postsecondary setting.
• Minimum five years of recent work experience as an RRT in a health care environment.
• Knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting.
• Knowledge and use of educational technologies.
• Experience in hybrid and online curriculum development is an asset.
• Knowledge of the National Competency Framework and program accreditation is an asset.
• Academic leadership demonstrated through curriculum development or program renewal.
• Commitment to continued learning in teaching and curriculum development is an asset.
• Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with Algonquin College’s Professor of the 21st Century competencies.
• Commitment to the success of all learners.

Responsibilities

• The design, revision, and updating of courses with input from stakeholders; define learning outcomes and align resources.
• Delivery of instruction in Fall, Winter, or Summer terms; cross-department teaching.
• Provide tutoring and academic advising for students in and out of class.
• Create a learning environment that leverages educational technologies.
• Evaluate student progress and oversee overall assessment within courses.
• Develop an environment conducive to success for all learners.
• Provide guidance to students, instructors, and adjunct faculty on teaching assignments.

Professional Responsibilities

• The design/revision/updating of courses, including consulting with program and course administrators and other faculty members, accrediting bodies, advisory committees and a variety of potential employers and students; defining learning outcomes and evaluating and validating these outcomes as they relate to industry standards, accreditation requirements and national competencies; specifying and approving learning approaches, necessary resources, etc.; incorporating educational technologies to meet the learning needs of 21st Century students; reviewing and revising curriculum and participating in professional development activities during non-teaching periods.

Teaching Responsibilities

• Delivery of instruction in the Fall, Winter, or Summer terms in home department or across departments.
• Ensuring student awareness of course learning outcomes and evaluation techniques.
• Providing tutoring and academic advising for students both in and out of class.
• Providing a learning environment which makes effective use of available resources, including educational technologies.
• Evaluating student progress/achievement and assuming responsibility for the overall assessment of the student’s work within assigned courses.
• The development and creation of a learning environment that is conducive to success for all students.

Academic Leadership Responsibilities

• Providing guidance to students, to instructors, and to part-time professors relative to the professor’s teaching assignments.
• Participating in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees, and departmental/faculty meetings.
• Liaising with community members, engaging in program, Department, School or Faculty, and College promotion.
• Remaining current in the field of study and maintain awareness of emerging trends and practices related to teaching and learning in higher education.

Required Qualifications

• Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (with no restrictions) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
• Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences or related field of study.
• Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience, preferably in a postsecondary setting.
• Minimum five (5) years of recent work experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) in a health care environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of student success strategies in a postsecondary setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the use of educational technologies.
• Experience in the development and delivery of hybrid and online curriculum is considered an asset.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the National Competency Framework for Respiratory Therapists and maintaining program accreditation considered an asset.
• Demonstrated provision of academic leadership considered an asset. Examples include but are not limited to providing guidance to colleagues and instructors, being actively involved in curriculum development or program renewal, participating in continued efforts to improve the quality of instruction offered to learners, and serving as program coordinator, academic advisor or curriculum administrator.
• Demonstrated commitment to continued learning in teaching and curriculum development is considered an asset. Examples include, but are not limited to, completion of training programs, participating at teaching and learning conferences, and/or more extensive training such as the Teaching Adult Lifelong Learners certificate program or other postsecondary programs in education.
• Highly effective communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
