Job Purpose:

At Sudbury Cedar Place we care, nurture possibilities, advocate strongly, and offer hope. The full time overnight worker is responsible to provide a safe and welcoming environment. To provide assistance to individuals and families through community referrals and housing supports. To ensure nightly meals are prepared and while giving purposeful support to those in need.

Terms And Conditions

Position Purpose summary:

Permanent Full Time Overnight Worker. Shifts 12:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. 72 hours bi-weekly

Week One: Monday to Friday

Week Two: Monday to Thursday

Accountabilities

Accountability #1

  • Exercising considerable initiative, carries out the duties of the position, with minimal direction and day-day supervision
  • Record and report activities, behaviors, and any incidents, which may occur during the shift, and/or call on duty personnel as required and outlined in policies. Enter into the internal data base HIFIS and server.

Accountability #2

  • Perform any new intake, and input into Homeless Individuals and Family System with proper consent. Prescreen guest and be mindful to a new person accordingly with current policies that adhere to our standards that are consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army Women and Family Shelter. Track turnaways into the HIFIS system.

Accountability #3

  • Conduct nightly rounds in house with duty co-worker randomly throughout the shift. Ensure the facility and resident beds and keep appropriate records in logbook.
  • Ensure all guests and staff secure and safe by checking all windows, doors, and exits during rounds
  • Prepare dinner meal for the following day. Take out food and prepare according to menu. Ensure stock including fruits and daily foods available for breakfast and lunch meals for residents of shelter

4. Accountability #4

  • Keep fridge and freezers organized and provide food inventory to management when necessary.
  • Enter statistics for referrals, turn away, good and services, night checks and check off in log and item list as per current policy and instruction
  • Clean main floor, organize kitchen, sanitize, and remove trash as required. Clean strainer in dishwasher nightly.
  • Sanitize hard surfaces regularly
  • Record refrigeration temperatures and proper food handlers

Perform Other Duties As Required.

Critical relationship management:

Internal

  • Report health, safety, food, concerns to incoming Management. Use the internal communications system to effectively communicate.
  • As required and applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to management.

Working Conditions

  • Be aware of universal precautions.
  • Consistency to guidelines for all occupants in shelter at any given time.
  • Knowledge on OHAS

The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.

Education, Qualifications And Certifications

  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience
  • Minimum Grade XII diploma
  • Community College Diploma in Social Work, Addictions, or related field an asset
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Original copy of Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC) with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • First Aid/CPR/and Safe Food Handlers Certification
  • Engage in formal evaluation session with supervisor at 3 month and 6 months, and yearly thereafter
  • Read and follow with the provisions of the Position Description and Operational Manual, which will be provided for the position, as well as the shift responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties position related duties as assigned

Note: Not all incumbents perform all the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Experience And Knowledge

  • Trauma informed approach and best practice
  • Ability to remain objective and approachable

Skills And Capabilities

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening. Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Basic Computer and clerical skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Bilingualism considered to be an asset.
  • Read and follow the Policy and Procedures Manual and the Employee Handbook. Every Employee must read and sign that they have read a copy and understand that they will be required to adhere too.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $19.36 to $19.36 with a maximum of $19.36.
